There are continual rumours and talk of the IRFU being difficult to work with when it comes to contract negotiations which I am sure does not help, and that is a valid enough thing to complain about.

Ok, if guys really want to leave they'll leave, but if they're on the fence or willing to talk the IRFU messing them about is going to be detrimental. Not at all suggesting that happened in this specific case.

One of the big factors in Sexton leaving was the IRFU dicking him about with a stupidly low offer.

I've heard similar from guys involved in rugby administration in Dublin.

This is purely speculation but I wonder if some of it is a hangover from the amateur era. Maybe some of the people in charge still can't grasp that players are and should be getting paid. Ireland voted against a RWC and it took them a while to actually refer to the tournament as a World Cup and I've heard stories about the teething problems Ireland had when the game went pro. Is it possible there are still a few dinosaurs in the corridors of power making it more difficult than it should be?

Like I said it's pure speculation on my part.

No, I don't think it's a holdover from the amateur days any more. The guys causing problems now according to the people I know are not the old lads.

He's the third high profile/current international player that has left Irish rugby in the last, what, decade or more (after Sexton and Ryan)? The IRFU do a remarkable job at keeping players here.

Excuse me but what about Ben Betts? I believe he left for Leicester.

I still haven't gotten over that one, to the extent I cannot speak (or type) his name.

I wonder was Barry Daly in the running prior to injury.

Sean Cronin out. Rob Herring in. Didn't see that coming.

And of course, the alphabetical listing doesn't go all the way to Z...

    No Sean Cronin?

    No zebo.

Cronin getting the axe is a fairly big surprise. Herring deserves the callup.

    No TOH is disappointing

Some big calls here looking through this. Delighted for Ryan and Porter. Bit surprised Keatley is there and no Ross Byrne.

Cronin being left out is quite astonishing to be honest, I'd have thought he was very much still in the fold especially with Scannel injured.

Delighted Tommy O'Donnell got in, deserves it on form.

Chris Farrell is blessed, playing like a drain and never previously part of the setup. Delighted to see McCloskey brought in, has earned it and then some.

Plenty of curve balls there to be honest. #IJWT

LOL Adam Byrne. Don’t have a problem with it but it’s ironic.

The Zebo cut is massive. Cronin, I'm not so shocked about. He has been struggling with injuries and has not been guaranteed his Leinster place for over a year.

But Zebo....that's huge. I think this will finally firmly put to bed any notions about people still being selected whilst abroad. Zebo isn't Murray or Sexton but he's on the next tier of players and will continue to play in Ireland for another 7 months.

Is there anything about an injury for him?

Trimble and Bowe left out is notable, you'd wonder if that's it for them in green.

He was always going to get capped at some point and they appear to have culled Bowe and Trimble now.

Dave Kearney must have dirty photos of Schmidt.

I see to remember you posting about NZ « punishing » Piutau.

Personally I think it’s cutting off nose to spite face, Zebo should be selected until overseas.

It might backfire on IRFU if players such as Murray etc think Zebo has been dealt a raw hand there.

Props: Furlong, Healy, Kilcoyne, McGrath, Porter, Ryan
    Hookers: Best, Herring, Tracey
Locks: Dillane, Henderson, Ryan, Toner, Treadwell
Back rows: Conan, Leavy, SOB, TOD, POM, Ruddock, Stander
    Scrumhalves: Marmion, McGrath, Murray
    Outhalves: Carbery, Keatley, Sexton
    Centres: Aki, Farrell, Henshaw, McCloskey
Back 3: Byrne, Conway, Earls, Kearney, Kearney, Stockdale, Sweetnam

No Rory Scannell, TOH or Cronin a big shock.

Both Kearneys probably fortunate to feature. Presume this is them shoed in to start the next 2 weeks at Leinster

This is the first Schmidt selection ever where I feel he is giving youth a chance: Porter, Ryan, Byrne etc.

    Good man.

Dave Kearney is most likely in because Zebo isn't.

Sub hooker is straight up poor. Otherwise it's a decent squad, even if a few guys have been unlucky.

Injury for Zebo? He's playing tomorrow

Yes but even if he wasn't he still wouldn't be near the squad on current form. Ross Byrne would get ahead of him currently and he wasn't picked (nor should he have been IMO
