Absolutely can't stand him and his podcast. Each to their own obviously.

Me too :D I did give him a try as he was so popular, but just switched off after maybe 20-30 minutes of two different episodes. I didn't like it at all. I didn't know anything about him...just assumed he was a comedian.

I currently look forward to the Sporkful the most. It's just such a fun, light-hearted look at food and eating and getting the most enjoyment out of every meal. :)

i find while some of his podcasts are great he says quite a few so called "facts" that are wrong

I started listening to the LORE Podcast over the weekend! Absolutely love it! Basically it looks at the actual truth behind scary folklore stuff like Vampires & Werewolves etc.

He can be alright depending on the guest - if they are an expert on a chosen field. A real expert now, not just some commentator or expert in pseudoscience. Usually what they have to say is interesting and even Joe constantly talking macho blather can't ruin it.

    Techstuff.

it's not about current gadgets or transient crap like that. Does a lot of history of companies (e.g. Sony, Amazon etc) and other interesting subjects.
    It's not tech-centric per se.
I think that the presenter is one of the best - good voice and delivery.
On a side note I find in terms of female US presenters - a lot of them have nasally voices that really annoy me and put me off the podcast.

The Washington Post have a 10 part podcast "The American War" out. It's a companion piece to Ken Burns new documentary on the Vietnam War. Worth checking out.

Loved Dirty John! The daughters are gas

Listened to the first episode of Dirty John and finding it good but my God some people in it are really annoying!

I've been listening to U Talkin U2 To Me. Hosts are Adam Scott of 'Parks and Rec' fame and comedian Scott Aukerman. They're two huge U2 fans but routinely take the piss out of the band, themselves and podcasting as a format. It's one of the funniest podcasts I've ever listened to. Some eps are barely even U2 related at all. It's brilliant.

Like a lot of people here I really enjoyed Dirty John - What an absolute bastard! It managed to stay riveting to the end, which is something that True Crime Pods can sometimes struggle to do after reeling you in with an intriguing first episode.

Hated the Ads though. It's free content, so I guess they've got to pay the bills somewhow, but they were so intrusive and the things they were shilling sounded so lame - "limited to only 500 new players...a week!"

I love 'Beautiful/Anonymous' too - people phone the host, Chris Gethard and tell their story.

Inside the Exorcist, the follow up to Inside Psycho.

Lets Not Meet, stories of real life encounters with murderers and nutters in general.

They Walk Among Us, kinda like a UK Casefile.

Started listening to They Walk Among Us. Narrator sounds a lot like the guy from Casefile. Very enjoyable so far!

File on 4 - Police Protection.

Episode about police misconduct/dysfunction in the UK, linked to a murder case.

Sword and Scale can piss right off after that. It cued up unexpectedly while I was catching up with my subscriptions and before I knew it I was 40 minutes into the story... Then snap. Just as it was about to get into what happened... “ If you want to hear the the rest of this head on over to Patreon...”

F*ck you Mike. I always thought him to be a bit of a dick and that’s just the cherry on top.

That's poor form. Never listened to sword and scale, but they could at least let people know from the beginning that the conclusion would be paid subscription only.

I've no problem with paid extras, but it shouldn't detract from the free feed. They'd be better off going fully patreon.

    I've read that he's a bit of a d!ck alright.

Deliberately misleading. I have sent them a complaint and unsubscribed. I'll stick to Casefile instead.

That was SO annoying. I am so turned off S&S after that what a d!ckish move.
I've read a lot of stuff about him over on Reddit. He seems....unusual.

sounds like a deluded ass and from looking into him on reddit this is more than reinforced.
Broadening the issue out to a more general point, not just addressing this guy, take netflix or spotify you get tons of content for 10 euro a month.
most people aren't going to pay 5 euro for just a podcast - especially in terms of subscribing to a couple or more.
the second captains have done ok but I prefer the normal newstalk guys tbh.

Yeah I used to religiously listen to second captains, I didn't sign up as it was gaa season and I'd no interest. I haven't really missed them as don't listen to soccer podcasts/news and their one Monday show does me. Casefile is the only one I'd pay for if I had too. But as you say it should be you pay and access all.

It's possible that there will be some equivalent platform to Netflix/spotify for podcasts.

If I look at the ones I listen to religiously, most of them have financial support as being part of media organisations. However, there have been a few podcasts I've listened to which have been self-funded. Unfortunately, I think all of them are defunct at this point.

I don't listen to SC but very happy that they seem to have made the subscription model work - it gives them a deserved financial reward for their work.

I wouldn't pay €5 a month for each and every podcast I listen to but I would pay €10 or so if I knew it was going to podcasts that needed it.

I just listened to the first episode of Heavens Gate, I wasn't impressed. I was particular annoyed that the presenter said more than once that it could happen any of us that we could end up in a group like Heavens Gate which is absolute rubbish.

I'll stick with it and see if it improves but it's disappointing so far.

New season of Someone Knows Something is out Nov 7th. Season 2 well worth a listen (I skipped 1 as was a baby).

What are the best sword and scale episodes?

Preet Bharara has a good podcast called Stay Tuned. Gives a great insight in laymans terms what's happening with the Mueller investigations into the Trump administration

I started to listen and have pretty much the same impression. I'll give it about 3 episodes before I ditch it.
