Jet lag may be a factor? When traveling across many times zones I try for short naps to compensate. Sleep is accumulative. Helps me.

If you are travelling for fun, why worry about regular sleep?

Have you tried meditation?, it works for me most of the time. It can be learned from a professional counsellor or through Tai-Chi or Yoga.
Basically it involves focusing on you breathing while emptying the mind of all thoughts.

    I know what you mean!

I find that i need to distract myself and one way of doing that is to listen to a podcast, preferably some kind of discussion or interview on a topic i’m interested it, i normally drift off within 10-15 mins.

Meditation doesn't work for me. Mind's always going. Can't shut it off. To compensate, I workout hard daily. Exhausted I switch off when head hits pillow. But then I dream. Almost always. So mind is still working while asleep. If only for seconds at a time.
