Just got a new lagging jacket for the hot press.
Is there any benefit in leaving the old one on and putting the new one over it or should I just replace?
The old one is probably 20 years old, few rips and tears in it, but generally in decent nic.

If using the old one -which I wouldn’t- I would put it on the outside. Otherwise the new one wouldn’t fit properly unless oversized in the first place. Also make sure not to compress the jacket, as the air pockets help with insulation. Be careful not to cover the top of the immersion heater.
    Lagging pipework will also help.
If ever changing cylinder, prelagged ones give much better performance.

why does the immersion need to be left uninsulated. does it need to air cool itself

Cause it says so on the tin. :)
But seriously, it gets very hot. Anything electrical that gets hot shouldn’t be covered, especially in a hotpress. Immersion, motorised valves, shower pumps

I've seen a house go on fire. The element caused the fire. The homeowner had to move out for almost 2 months inc the Christmas period while the house was repaired. There shouldn't even be clothes kept in the hot press. We are possibly the only country in the world that does this. All electric appliances need air to circulate around them to stop them overheating.
I saw another house fire started by a phone charger plugged in behind the top of the bed. Bed pushed up against the charger. Charger overheated and the bed went on fire with the couple in bed.
