Worst storm you can remember

The storm at Christmas 98 was the worst I remember. I was watching the tree outside our house swaying quite violently and I kept saying to my dad that I was going to move my car and he was saying not to be silly that its fine and that the tree has been there longer than I have and it'll be there for a lot longer too but I wasn't happy so went out and moved the car to the other side of the house and went back inside. About 10 minutes later there was a loud crack and I looked out and the tree had fallen right where I had been parked and would have completely destroyed the car if it had hit it.

My dad had a big bowl of humble pie with his tea that night and we had firewood for the rest of the winter.

Charlie. I remember Ballsbridge (the actual Bridge) was under water and there were boats and frog men on Anglesea road.

Charley for me. I was in my early teens.

Strangely enough, I don't even remember the one in 97 that people are taking about.

Hurricane Charlie. I was in London in a cheapo hotel off the Gloucester Road. Had a few pints down in a pub opposite Gloucester Rd tube station, then back to the hotel. Was awakened in the middle of the night by an awful noise. It sounded like an articulated truck being revved to screaming point and reversing up and down the lane outside my window. Fell back to sleep. Bear in mind, there had been no talk of an impending storm, so I just thought it was a joyrider in a truck.

Next morning walking down Gloucester Road, there were trees and large branches scattered everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE all along the road.

Then we had that storm on Christmas Eve (I think), was it 97/98? We used to have a holly tree in the back garden, until that night. Kids excited while I was out the back tying the tree down in case it went airborne - and that was late at night, lashing down and the wind howling round me!

Was a teenager when Charlie hit in summer 86. Worst I've ever seen here.

Dargle burst its banks and caused serious flooding in Bray.

    Dodder as well in Ballsbridge.

Never seen wind or rain like it. Ophelia is going to be worse

I think Feb 2014 had a bad one.

I remember huge trees being uprooted in our local woodlands.

I'm surprised Michael Fish wasn't strung up from the highest tree after the storm of 1987

I've only lived in ireland for 10yrs so Storm Darwin in Feb 2014 is the worst proper storm i have experienced and i live in Clare so was pretty close to the worst of it.

However in May 2014 i experienced a squall line from that formed a tornado funnel cloud and when that passed through i have never experienced anything like that before, while short lived it was simply incredible and made me very glad i don't live somewhere where they get proper tornados.

The 98 one was the worst along the north coast without a doubt, damn near caused a major nuclear incident in Ayrshire too.

Christmas Eve 1997 was by far the worst ever. Darwin Feb 12th 2014 and St Stephen's Day 1998 would follow closely.

The only one that stands out for me is, The Great Storm in 1987. Lived in England at the time, and seeing the aftermath, numerous trees down, loads in Wimbledon Common, Richmond Park, and various other green spaces. Many of them left as they were, made safe and become new natural habitats, or gathering points for familys/friends/kids.

Would have nearly missed the whole thing, only for my Mum waking me to see if I was okay.

Was on a cruise ship sitting outside New York for Hurricane Sandy. That was interesting !! When we eventually got back into NY 4 days later the place was like Tumbleweed City, nobody on the streets and the whole place in darkness. Strange, strange experience.

In this country the storm on Christmas Eve '97. I was working in a shop in Cork City centre watching tiles and sections of roofing flying around the streets. Had to go to our stores at one stage and was nearly decapitated by a section of the courthouse roof. I was a lot better off than the fella who had to go up a crane that was on the courthouse as it had been left in a locked position and there was a very real fear that it was going to keel over.
