I remember getting awful soup in Decalf before actually. Was potato and leek (I know, not the most exciting anyway!). Tasted like water. Shame as they do great sandwiches and cakes!

is it a bar or more of an eatery?

We were there early enough on a Saturday, about 4 until 6, so I don't know what it would be like later on. We were upstairs and everyone up there was eating. They've a small menu but everything we had was really tasty.

Miyazaki posted on Facebook about their new restaurant, it's to be named "ichigo ichie" and the post says "will be a "Kappou Restaurant," Cork's first taste at Japanese fine dining".

    Quite looking forward to it.

I'd say more eatery during the day and bar later upstairs was closed a sat night we went there.

Hi.... has anybody tried 'Sliced'? It's beside the bus station - across from the entrance to the Merchant's Quay Car Park? Just spotted it during the week - it looks really nice. Not sure what type of food it serves .... but the name suggests it might be a healthy option (then can justify the wine!)

Sliced is a pizza and pasta place. Haven't been but some work friends went for lunch and liked it.

There are two of them, i have been to the Ballincollig one. It’s salads and pizza. Huge salad menu actually.

    I liked it.

May have been discussed on here before, but what happened to The Meatball Place? Walked past it this week and it was shut down.

    Just didn't survive.
People seemed to like it but I guess not enough people went.

Anyone know if WildWays is ever going to re-open?

The rent on that lane is meant to be astronomical. I went in there a good few times, mainly at weekends, and it was always busy.

Its a bad sign when a place is busy on a regular basis but still can't afford the overheads to stay open and in trade.

    Not busy enough, it seems.
Their business plan would have allowed for the rent. If it was mostly busy and still failed, they must have had very optimistic projected sales.

Anyway, what ever the reason, it's a pity. It's not nice to see people having a go and going under. It must be a hard decision to pull the plug.

It may have been busy at weekends but I'd walk past most weekdays and it was always totally empty. It is a shame to see but it just didn't work for whatever reason.

I went once and didn't go back. Food was fine but there were better options elsewhere in the city in a similar price bracket. Can't say I know anyone that had a bad experience in there, but I also don't know anyone that went back more than once or twice - it just didn't seem to strike a chord.

    ---

Anyway - went to Holy Smoke for the first time over the weekend. I know, late to the party but...

It was fine, I guess? Service was great, wait staff and barman were all lovely and helpful, the options at the bar were great (anywhere that sells Punk by the pint has my vote) but the food just wasn't great.

Got a pitmaster platter - chicken, ribs and pulled pork with cornbread and slaw - and it was all so dry. The ribs had a sauce on them and were nice but the chicken and the pork desperately needed something.

Just in comparison to, say, White Rabbit, it was all a little bit plain. Even the condiments on the table weren't going to do much to lift it - ketchup, mayo or hot sauce... Just didn't scream BBQ to me.

I'd go back if someone asked me to, but I'd probably get a burger or steak instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 258 ✭✭nerwen

Wouldn't recommend steak there, but my friends generally like the burgers. Why would you go get an ok burger at a bbq place when you can get a great burger at one of the many burger places though, right?

Speaking of, wonder if West Cork Burger on Washington street is ever going to open, the sign has been up for months.

    West Cork Burger has opened.

I see Michael Twomey is down as supplying the Wagu Beef for the burgers.
He owns 3 butcher shops, Macroom, Bandon and Bantry. Good at using local suppliers.

On coffee to go, I see Lidl have it for €1 at their bigger new shop in Macroom, in the foyer. I presume it's also available at new shop in Wilton. Anyone try it?
Unless it's poor, good for coffee drinkers to get their fix, for a euro.

Docklands is from the team behind the former Club Brasserie. I think it's open now

a very good price, it can't be any worse than the muck some garages & shops are trying to call coffee for double the price or more.

I saw it in Wilton and looks like a dedicated coffee machine. For 1 Euro, it is worth a try and cheaper than the coffee imitation we get at the machine in our company.

On the topic of burgers, a gang of us went to The Silly Goose last Saturday for the rugby.
Three of us had burgers which were absolutely exceptional,
Two of the guys are regulars at SOB and both thought their burgers Saturday were far superior to anything they've ever had at SOB.
I could only compare to Coqbull which I think is mediocre anyway so it was streets ahead of this and all in all one of the nicest burgers I've had in recent times.
The burgers come with a choice a fries including sloppy, spicy and curly.
The other guys had eaten so they only had wings and a selection of the fries which they all raved about.
They are very reasonable aswel and have some nice booths with TVs where you can watch a match and where some families were sitting.
We all agreed we'll definitely go back sooner rather than later.

had the opposite experience. Went theere with my girlfriend and we both got burgers and spanish fries. The amount of cheese and grease made it inedible. absolutely revolting.

Yes, Docklands is open as a deli and restaurant. Complete revamp of the club brasserie (which I loved!), same people though. I'll be popping in before the weekend hopefully, will report back.

Flange, what was so good about the burgers?
    Not over cooked?
    Not too thick/thin?
    Great toppings?
    Nice buns?

Everyone has a different idea of what makes a great burger. I'm curious as to what made this burger so good for you.

Where's the recommended takeaway place to go to cope with the withdrawal symptoms of Miyazaki being closed for a few days? I'd planned to go this evening and forgot about it.

Dashi Deli maybe? Soba or Ramen but that is a different league to Miyazaki.

I'd stick to cornflakes for a few days and enjoy the reopening...take-away in Cork is fairly limited IMO;)

If you have a car the only other "authentic" asian place I know of is Golden Elephant Thai restaurant in Douglas.

I've heard good things about Yuang Ming Jang or whatever it's called. Apparently you're supposed to ask in a shifty way for the "real Chinese" menu.
