Time for the GAA to reward elite players like Cooper and Shefflin by setting up a financial reward system. For example. All ireland winners 30k All Star winner 15k Player of the year: 50k All ireland finalist 15k All Ireland semi finalist 10k Quarter finalist: 5k Everyone else: 2k. Unfair you might say to the players in weaker counties but it would reward the elite players for their achievements over the years and bringing the big gates to Croke Park. It would also give an extra incentive for the less successful counties to try and get up to the big boys. These are not huge figures that would break the bank when you consider what other sports pay their players. You would be talking 5-6 million which is about 5% of GAA revenue of 100m+. And you would have players like Gooch and Shefflin with a number of All irelands and all stars at the end of their careers quite comfortable financially. Full time professionalism in the current structure would never work but by using a reward system it would look after top players whilst keeping the amateur ethos in tact.
