Which car hire company is this? I would guess its very outdated text back when they used to take an imprint of the card -> I've rented with non-embossed cards before from a good few suppliers.

That car hire crowd is so behind times.

I can understand that they don't want a debit card (which the N26 is) but especially in the US the trend of high level cards is to look good not to have the number raised anymore. In fact most of citibanks new cards are looking similar to N26 black with the number on the back despite that they are credit cards.

According to their logic a Revolut card (embossed but a prepaid debit card) would be accepted while a JP Morgan Private Banking card (which you can't get unless you have serious $ in the account) would not.

You can use your N26 to hire cars where the car rental agency accepts debit cards, but there are drawbacks to that. The car company might want to block a high amount of funds on the card which is than not available to you. On a credit card you might not feel that because of your limit but on the debit card you will be unable to access that funds. When you return the car, they also might not release the funds immediately to give it some time to see if there are any charges you still might need to pay (petrol, parking tickets etc.), so the funds might not come back immediately either.

You need to search for a company that accepts debit cards and ensure that you have enough funds available to cover the amount they want to reserve. No different with N26 than with your Irish visa debit card.

Fair play to N26, had an incident where a fraudulent transaction happend. I lost my card but unknown till i seen the tranastion on the app. reported it to N26 and Garda, cancelled card straight away. took about 10 days but got the chargeback and monies back into the account and new card arrived the same day. very smooth and well handled

AFAIK Avis accepts debit cards (for lower class vehicles) and Enterprise also takes debit cards (but blocks up to 1000£), but you will need to check with the location as the policies vary from location to location.

Beside that you always prepay a reservation and than use a credit card just for the guarantee.

But if you don't have a credit card anymore, you will need to do some more research and be prepared to pay more (i.e. additional insurance) and have a larger amount blocked on your N26 card.

I am looking to rent from Stansted airport from the 10th of next month.

I will gladly go with whoever will accept the N26 card.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as it is now close to the trip being ruined.

If no luck dealing with any of the majors, try Indigo Car Hire. They specialise in arranging debit card hire.

They are the ones with that sent me that email.

You have to ring or email them to book using a debit card. You can't do it online. And you need to ask them about non-embossed cards if that's what you have. Non-embossed cards used to just be cards with restricted functionality which is why they were not accepted for car rental. But as things have changed, this shouldn't be an issue any more.

Hertz. Sign up to the Gold club online and prepay the reservation. The embossed requirement is an outdated cover-all-bases thing and each location/franchise generally does as they wish.

Indigo have come back with the following:

    Goosed. :(

If you open an account Monday with the EBS, you should have sufficient time to get a debit card delivered that you could then use to book. Or see if they'd take Revolut?

You might want to post something in the travel section to see if anybody has experience with a debit card only car rental in the UK.

If you don't have a credit card, you might have to find alternative methods of transport.

Unfortunately nearly all of the easy to get cards are coded as debit or prepaid these days since mastercard cleaned up the rules (revolut, swirl, 3money, fire etc.) so that won't help you.

The only card that I know of that is easy to get and behaves like a credit card for the purpose of car rentals/hotels (if over 150£ authorization) is the curve card which you could link to the N26 card. https://support.imaginecurve.com/hc/en-gb/articles/213636689-Can-I-use-Curve-to-pay-a-hotel-or-rental-deposit- . But it's strictly speaking a commercial card for commercial use only.

Your only option is to get a credit card from either an Irish bank or a bank that accepts N26 as bank reference.

You might want to ask N26 if they are willing to give Bayern LB a bank reference and what the limit is they would respond with and than see if you can get yourself a Miles and More Credit card from Lufthansa which is available anywhere in the EEA as long as you have a German Bank account (which N26 is). They might start you off with a low limit like 100€ but it's a full credit card you can also load up. There are currently also discounts available on the yearly fee's for that. They won't give you real credit as it's more a charge card you have to pay back when due but it's coded as credit card and you also earn miles while spending.

There will be no extra fee if it works as they are not allowed, but last time I checked (I have closed my account since) Bank of Ireland didn’t allow standing orders to a non-Irish IBAN number (N26 will give you a German IBAN).

Has anyone managed this? Assuming the application in German?

I would suggest you first ask N26 if they are actually going to be able to provide a bank reference because being N26 that is not guaranteed. Without a bank reference you will not get the card.

If they say it is possible, get yourself a Miles and More account from Lufthansa.

Than apply, the application process is in in English and you will need to do an ID Now verification over your phone to validate your ID.

All they can do is reject you you if they don't like your application, you loose nothing.

I'm sure this has been posted plenty of times before but I am getting sick & tired of my current bank (won't name names) screwing me over with extra charges per month for ATM, contactless, etc

Any reasons not to move to N26? I understand it's no fees and easy to manage money.

Is setting up standing orders difficult? I send money occasionally to friends & family for various reasons, is this difficult to set up and presumably it'll take the standard business working day.

Do they provide loans/ overdraft facility and would I start getting paid into n26 as well?

Great account, well worth changing over.
    Standing orders very easy.
Transfers sent in the morning will show same day, unless the receiving bank is a dinosaur operation.
No loans, overdraft or credit (yet).

I registered to do the Euromillions tonight, but it would not go through. Is that because they do not allow it (gambling)?

TBH, i was kind of relieved, because of the way that site is set up to remember your details. I was just curious if that is the reason.

They probably only accept Irish credit/debit cards.

I believe not accepting a card because it is issued by a German bank would be illegal as per SEPA regulations (blocking it because the billing address is outside of Ireland would be fine though, but an Irish N26 customer presumably had a billing address in Ireland).
