Returning to Ireland mid tax year - what are the tax implications?

In need of some advice please. We have been living abroad for a number of years now and are planning our return.
If we return home mid tax year - are we liable to pay tax in Ireland on our salary earned outside of Ireland within that tax year? Is it dependent on the number of days we are resident in Ireland in that particular tax year? Could split year tax relief help? We are currently living in a tax free country.  Any advice would be really appreciated.

Google split year treatment and you will find Revenue's helpful guidance on it. Split year treatment means that employment income arising prior to moving to Ireland falls outside the Irish tax net. Note that other types of income and capital gains will likely still fall within the Irish tax net so manage your affairs carefully.
