So recently I have been getting few letters and parcel with a marking of an X (cross) on it. Something similar as follows,

Not getting paranoid, but I have gotten 2 in just the last two weeks (one letter and one parcel). Any idea as to why it is there ?

Any chance they were delivered in the afternoon/evening?

Nah, it was during the day as usual (before 9am)

I have had a few over the years. Think it is just because the sorting machines can't read the address/barcode for some reason so it was sorted manually.

It means it's been sampled as part of the quality of service monitor...where one in every x items is taken out and measured, weighed etc to form a profile of mail, which then formulates the profile of test mail. I have more than a passing knowledge of this.
