CIE Card?

I purchased my first Irish Rail Monthly Ticket today from a machine. It very clearly says:

C.I.E. ID: Write in CIE ID No. below
Valid only with current CIE ID Card.

No supervisor at the station knew anything about the card and there was no mention of it on the Irish Rail Web site. :P

Do I really need it? If yes, where do I get one?

Dublin Bus HQ used to do them. Never knew of anywhere else

Just bought a weekly season ticket from a machine and it says I need a Cie ID, was on the train before I noticed. What happens now? Seems mad to need one for a normal adult weekly ticket!! Will I get fined?

I thought you needed the of cards for the paper tickets and not with the leap cards (because personalised leap card is an id)
