Anyone that thinks they are discounted through a contract needs to do a course in marketing. Not just Apple, goes for any phone.

I have had an iPhone 4s and an iPhone 6 on contract both bought on their launch day in Ireland (so not discounted). I saved by being on contract with the iPhone 4s but can't remember how much, the iPhone 6 cost me about 200 euro less over 24 months than buying outright and getting a sim only contract.

I'd never pay that much for a phone and so far have never bought an iphone.

Never really understood the iphone craze anyway, new iphone comes out and there is only 1 to choose from. New android comes out and you have 5/6 to choose from

1 great phone vs 5 or 6 which are somewhere between decent and sh1te.

That's a depraved amount of money to spend on some crap phone which will go obsolete in a few years anyway.

I can't comment on how great the iphone is having never used one however 5 or 6 $hite android phones? Um no some are excellent and for the price point way better value.

Firstly you are comparing iPhones to a Android, which is not a phone but an operating system.

Yesterday. 3 phones were launched and there are also 8 different models in the iPhone range now.

:o I'm still using a regular Nokia phone from 2009. The battery on it is immense.

240 extra on top of what? 20 euro per month prepay? That's 720 over 2 years. You have paid 460 for that phone of that I am in no doubt. I have too by the way I have an s7 edge that i didnt give much up front for but I know I am paying full RRP for it.

Let's run the numbers. Every phone needs money put into it every month, be it prepay or billpay. For example, my last phone was a very crappy €70 Windows phone. I had it for two years. Between the upfront cost and top up, I put €550 into it. I'll put €730 into my iPhone in two years. Had I gone prepay on this model, the two year cost including paying for the handset and €20 monthly credit would be €940. The difference between billpay and prepay is €210 and, as I said, I'm a determined individual when it comes to sticking to terms. Paying €30 a month isn't much, as everyone has to put *some* money into whatever phone they have every month. So, I consider my new phone to have cost €250, taking into account the extra monthly cost. I'm happy with that personally.

Aha you are indeed correct about the operating system! I stand corrected :)

3 iphones launched? Never knew that and I appreciate you letting me know.

Most I'd ever pay is €300 - €350 for a phone so no iphone for me anytime soon lol

Bought an OPO for fiddy bucks off a friend. Still love it. It's my phone, browser, media player, does banking, takes photos, works as my sat-nav, reads error codes from my car AND has a lightsaber app! :D
Why on Earth would I need a phone for a bag of sand that does the same, if that even.
I still have an S3 at home that's connected to an ITT stereo from 1970 and works as media player and internet radio.
Most people who buy the new iphone, let's face it, they're bying a very, very expensive twitter machine that makes the odd call. Shiney bling for tech blondes.

I always said breaking the 1000 euro barrier would be a no-no but I'll probably buy the Note 8 phone when I comes out. Think it's about 900 quid.

I only replace my phone about every 3 years anyway. Replacing them sooner seems pointless (to me obv) as phone features have plateaued and in fact, the newer ones are probably too powerful for the tasks they have to perform.

That said, it's something I use quite a lot every day (calls, texting, browsing, music, GPS, reading, etc) so it's not such a huge price given the usage rates over 3 years.

With financial responsibilities these days, it's probably the only remaining personal gadget I'm really extravagant about these days.

Also people complaining about the price are forgetting that this is their high end phone so it will be dearer.

Iphone 8 was launched as well at same prices as last year's 7.

"High end phone so it will be dearer".

    Utter balls.

Let's take a look at the OnePlus 5. The models range from €499 to €559 - and this is 64GB to 128GB.

Here are the specs for the OnePlus 5.

Here are the specs for the iPhone X

Here is a side-by-side comparison between the two.

As you can see, the OnePlus 5 competes pretty well against the iPhone X. Just with a lot less name recognition.

    €559 for a 128GB phone. Against €1179 for an iPhone X.

    That's double the price.

There is no justifying the iPhone X price. I could buy a top-notch Gaming PC for the exact same price.

I think for a lot of folks (myself included) the OS is actually the sticking point. I have been using iPhones for years, since the 4. I use an iPhone for work. I have a mac, and an iPad. I do also have an android tablet for college stuff that's ok to use, but just not even half as slick or integrated as Mac and iOs. I find Mac os much more convenient and having had windows laptops, I find Apple products just last a lot longer, and keep their value.

Plus, having had an iPhone for 5-6 years now, I've sunk a lot of money into apps that I like, and games for the iOs platform. I don't like using Android as an OS, and it annoys me. I'm at a point in my life now where I'm happy to pay an extra price for convenience. Likewise yeah, I could save myself €10 a month by not having Netflix and watching my movies on whatever dodgy service there is, having to find which are the best versions of things I want to watch. I could save myself another €10 a month by not having Spotify, and just downloading torrents of music I want to listen to to my laptop and doing it that way, or by having the free version and having to listen to adds every 3 songs. I prefer my sanity and convenience I've gotten used to.

On the flipside, my partner can't work my phone or laptop half as easily as her Android or Windows machines- she has a block like I have with Android. He phone was about the same price on contract as my new iPhone will be. So what's the big deal?

What you are comparing it to is irrelevant from Apple's view point it's their high end phone and that was my point. The other arguments you make are all debatable

They don't have to justify their price, it's simply up to people to buy it or not.

Why there is so much outrage over a company making money is beyond me.

Do you get at angry at BMW, Mercedes, Rolls Royce, Hermes, Rolex and Cartier as well?

No they're not. They're not debatable at all. The "high end phone" has shag all to do with it. You're paying over a grand for name recognition --- for a phone that doesn't compete against a much cheaper phone in various areas.

    It's all very silly.

    Rolex v Casio
    BMW v Skoda
    Nike/Adidas v O'Neills
    D4 House v D24 House.

Could go on and on with loads of examples, some stuff in life is dearer than others and that's not going to change.

If all of the items you listed cost hundreds of thousands and you could get cheaper versions that beat the more costlier items in many areas for half the price, then, yes, there would likely be outrage.

I think you've missed the point entirely.

or do you really think the only difference in your examples is the price?

So are they launching versions 8, 9 and 10 all at once? Does that not say "here's an iPhone 8 for €700 but it's already obsolete?"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,834 ✭✭✭Useful.Idiot

the Samsung S8 (which the X looks completely inspired by) is a better phone in several ways including the edge-to-edge screen and you can get that online for 560e nowadays. That's a price differential of about 600e for similar specs so what are you paying extra for exactly? iOS?

    OnePlus does the exact same.

When the 3 was out, there was barely a few months before the 3T came out. The 3T was only out a few months before the 5 came out (they skipped 4 because they're a Chinese company and 4 is seen as bad luck). At least with those phones, they actually make pretty substantial changes, without rising the price too much.

I'll consider a OnePlus if Xiaomi don't have anything interesting when I get a new phone.. My current Mi5 is the best phone I've ever used and I'd rate it higher than almost everything.

Although if I don't go mid-range and instead splash out, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is class looking. Look at how wonky that crap at the top of the iPhone X is compared to this..

    xiaomi-mi-mix-2-hero.jpg?itok=5e3wLKiq

If it's like the Mi Mix, you just turn it upside down as the front camera is at the bottom. That's more innovative thinking that wrecking the top of the phone.

Not missed the point at all.

For example I have driven a new Skoda Superb and it was indeed superb. Fully kitted out and had every mod con you could think of.

Is at least €10k cheaper than a same level BMW but it has to as its brand and reputation or not as strong as BMW's.

    Same with the other products.

The simple answer is to contain your outrage and just buy the product you can afford and are comfortable with and let those who want to buy an iPhone just do so.
