Can anyone recommend Dexter? Need something new after Fargo.

First two seasons are great. Third is poor. The fourth is possibly the best in the series. John Lithgow is amazing in it.

After that it goes downhill rapidly.

Those seasons mentioned above though are really fantastic.

Straight Outta Compton added this morning.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant added this morning

You reminded me to check when the second part of Allegiant was coming out, it's not they've cancelled it :( apparently they may turn it into a TV show though.

There was meant to be a second part to that piece of poo?

It had some of the worst special effects I've seen in recent times.

If you're expecting the terrorists in Nocturama to resemble the sort of modern day extremists that carry out atrocities the world over, you'll be disappointed. This is a film concerning beautiful French teenagers, whose motivations here remain vague and certainly aren't rooted in any sort of coherent ideology. But do not let that put you off this extraordinarily well crafted arthouse thriller from Bertrand Bonello.

(some general details of the not really 'spoilable' film below - stop reading if you'd prefer to go in blind, though)

The film is broken into several extended sequences: a slow-build opening hour that barely features a word of dialogue for the first 15-20 minutes; an extended second half set entirely in the confines of a luxury department store; and a few short flashbacks that only somewhat fill in the context of the events that unfold over one afternoon and night in Paris.

There are some extraordinarily effective techniques employed by Bonello to craft a considered but absolutely compulsive thriller. Time overlaps, editing often jumping back several seconds to give us another perspective on an unfolding event. The quiet dread of the opening half is a masterful exercise in build up, all the more powerful for the ambiguity about what's happening / about to happen. And everything culminates in one of the most brutal, chilling finales in many years. And the music cues are on ****ing point.

I say the motivations remain vague... but Bonello goes the George A Romero route of utilising the symbolic potential of a shopping mall to striking effect. These are people adrift in a capitalist society, trying to find meaning or relief among the rows of expensive products - if modern day terrorists are often zealots, these wayward teens feel like the opposite. This is an unusual film that goes out of its way to avoid easy answers or commentary - but the precision of the delivery alone makes this essential viewing, and one of the most welcome additions to Netflix in some time.

No date for when it will drop on Netflix.

Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond – Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton.
Chris Smith’s film is a deep dive into actor Jim Carrey’s time spent portraying famed and complicated comedian Andy Kaufman. Using approximately 100 hours of footage shot on the set of Man on the Moon capturing Carrey’s transformation into Kaufman for four months, the film is described by the streaming giant as a “oddly unique experience and emotional journey”.

In 1999, Milos Forman cast Jim Carrey to play cult comedian Andy Kaufman in his biopic Man on the Moon. What followed was an intensely bizarre and emotional film production. Surrounded by Kaufman’s friends and family on set, Carrey thoroughly “became” Andy and, alternately, Tony Clifton, Kaufman’s obnoxious lounge singer alter ego. Much like Kaufman’s comedy, Carrey’s acting took on a performance art quality during the film. He never broke character on set, the cast and the crew referred to him as either ‘Andy’ or ‘Tony’ depending on who he was embodying (he had created complete and separate identities for each).

Carrey earned critical acclaim and a Golden Globe for the performance, but many of the production’s most Kaufmanesque moments played out behind the scenes. Captured on video by Andy’s former girlfriend, Lynne Margulies and former writing partner, Bob Zmuda, Jim & Andy sees Carrey look back at the resulting footage 18 years later, reflecting on how he and Andy came up in oddly parallel universes, his experience channelling Andy and Tony and more broadly the spiritual journey of his career.

“For almost two decades this brilliant performance from Jim Carrey has resonated with audiences and fans of Kaufman’s, but the story behind the film – a true piece of entertainment history has remained largely unknown,” says Lisa Nishimura, VP of Original Documentaries for Netflix. “Chris Smith and Spike Jonze have masterfully unearthed and explored Jim’s complex and artful creative process, hurling audiences right into the mind of a genius.”

Finished El Chapo the other day. It was good. That's all though.
I thought they spent way too much time in the prison while I was watching it, but looking back it's obviously going to a huge turning point in Chapo's life.
I don't know why I'm on his side, but I hope the prison guard and the warden get it! :pac:For entertainment purposes!

Any idea when Jane The Virgin Season 4 is starting? All I know is that it will be on weekly.

The biggest issue I found with El Chappo was that
he just seemed really bad at it. Anytime he tried to do something, he got caught. Or arrested. Or stopped
. I kind of gave up when it seemed more soap opera-y.

Another wonderful addition in the form of The Fits. A debut feature from Anna Rose Holmer, it's a semi-allegorical, semi-grounded variation on a typical coming of age tale. Follows one young girl as the girls around her start having random spasms and attacks (the eponymous fits), and the film becomes an artfully told tale about belonging and identity. It's physical, energetic filmmaking, and has absolute respect for its cast. It's just over an hour long, and the final few minutes see Holmer pull off one of the most graceful, transcendent endings of recent years.

This and Nocturama are the sorts of crossover arthouse gems that Netflix needs more of :)

    Bleed for This

Very impressive boxing biopic. Surprised I haven't heard more about it. Miles Teller is tops as usual, with a strong supporting cast. Fascinating true story.

American Horror Story - Roanoke season 6 added today.

I have just started to watch this by other means. Some of the previous series seemed to wane a bit in the spookiness.

This one is back up there,

Angelina Jolie's First They Killed My Father was also added today.

That was woeful. Like a bad day at mosney by the looks on some of the actors faces. Like an RTE version of the killings fields.

Fantastic! I watched all of the series except the last one with Lady Gaga, because it was just awful.

    American Vandal...

.. watched the first 4 episodes and it's very good, not just a simple spoof crime documentary the trailer paints it as.

Very well written, funny and enthralling!

I can't keep up with all the stuff arriving on Netflix lately. Trying to get through Atypical and the Confession Tapes and now American Vandal is there too. All this on top of Mr Mercedes and South Park is just going to prove my point, nobody needs Sky anymore.

    nobody needs Sky anymore.

Well, except that Twin Peaks: The Return was better than the entire Netflix slate of original programming combined.
