The asparagus I bought in my local supermarket comes all the way from Peru

It is of course possible to buy asparagus from places closer to Ireland
Asparagus has a season, early spring is it's best time AFAIK, please correct me if I'm wrong.

So, should items with hefty air miles be imported when they're out of season in Ireland

Yes, an those Chinese should stop buying €300+ million worth of dairy products from Ireland. There have to be cows closer to them than ours.

Why would you buy something that you know is out of season in Ireland and then complain about it. A bit late to make a stand after you ate it.

I like having a wide range of foods available to me even in winter.

I often think this as I buy my French Baby potatoes in Dunnes because there is no Irish equivalent available.

Tbf, I've been trying to get asparagus from closer to home for ages - the only bit of luck I had was a Polish shop that used to stock it in season (May), but that's since closed down.

I hate the thought how far it's come, but I do love asparagus. At least it IS available now, you couldn't get any at all here when I first moved here.
Shame though that it's only the green asparagus, not the white one.

I'm very happy that produce is available internationally when it's out of season locally. I think it's a good thing overall.
