Why is Lyric FM national and RTE Gold not?

Seems not to make sense in terms of broadening RTE branding and commercial appeal*

I listen to Lyric but don't see it having the mass appeal that golden oldies stations have, particularly in the sticks where choice is extremely limited when on the move.

*I guess it's RTE's attempt at helping us to better ourselves.

ermm because lyric has been around since the 80s (as FM3) and until relatively recently 2fm was playing lots of oldies.

But would an oldies station not be more appealing?

In spite of it being around since the 80s Lyric is broadcasting a very niche area attracting 2% listenership.

    I can't stomach 2fm, haven't for years, it's dumbed down too much.

Lyric is actually getting about 5% in Dublin now.. RTE gold is just a jukebox playing mostly 10 a penny oldies, 4fm started out as an oldies station staffed almost entirely by ex rte pros but didn't attract much listeners either.
