Mercury is already liquid, so that's not it.
It would be if the mercury were at -38º.

Looksee is right (see post #1538).

Bonzodog2 seems to have gone on a walkies so may I profer an interim question?

The theme tune of which TV series consists of a melody of the series title in Morse code?

I have to offer - Morse?

though actually something is distantly rattling around in the back of my head, it may come to me.

The news? (Not a TV series in the strictest sense of the word, but...)

QI had a bit about their theme being morse for something I recall.

Whoops! Yes Looksee, you are correct. The Inspector Morse theme uses the same idea. The music in the question uses just one instrument (piccolo) whereas the Morse theme uses a symphony orchestra and that must have caused it to slip by me. Nonetheless it might be fun to pause a bit in case anybody (eg Srameen) comes up with the theme that I had in mind.

Well done OG, you've decoded my secret message to Srameen. I had asked him to hold off in the hope that there was some more fun to be knocked out. Instead, all that was knocked out was a blushing apology from me to Looksee. She was right in that her answer ("Inspector Morse") was a valid one although not the one I had in mind - that was Srameen's answer: "Some Mothers do 'ave 'em".

I suggest that the only resolution to the mess that I have created is a question each from Srameen and Looksee and a reiterated apology from me. A bonus award could be a question from OldGoat!

Who are these and what connects them?

One of the group members had a yacht named drum?
First appeared in Ester Rantzens 'big time' working 9 to 5 in 1980?
The sun always shone on TV for this band?

Woop! Always happy with a bonus.

Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi - what is the full title of his most famous creation?

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

I know the common name and should know the title. It'll come to me when I least expect it, I'm sure.

I think I can part answer this...

    Is the connection Scottish/Scotland?
