Looking at the video as soon as the car entered the fog, I was screaming "slow down, you stupid %&*!" at the screen.

After the widespread coverage of the massive pile-up in the UK on the Isle of Sheppey bridge not too long ago, you'd think people would have learnt, but sadly not.

there's a danger in slowing down too of course...if someone else doesn't . What was that white car doing? He hit someone and then seemed to accelerate.

Shame on him for not being able to tell his pedals apart after ploughing into a crowd of cars he didn't see 3 secs before lol - not condoning anything but you'd swear you'd all behave liek some F1 driver crossed with a fighter pilot who was SAS trained.

That's a perfect example of why you shouldn't drive into a space you can't see.

15-20 metres of visibility. That's not a lot of wiggle room when you're carrying a lot of speed.

Pity those drivers did'nt realise that in time and slowed down when the realised that they could'nt see

Exactly! If the drivers were dropping speed when they first saw the smoke, there would have been much less chance of hitting something, or having something hit them. You could clearly see the smoke at the start of the video.

Every year its the same, particularly in the U.K. drivers refusing to slow down for poor visibility road conditions, will they ever learn!
Those drivers should have been crawling along going into the fog, not after they are well into it.

A similar thing happened on the M7 near Naas a couple of years ago, it's the same everywhere, but more noticeable in the UK due to more fog and busier motorways.

Thats right, I remembered after posting.
There was one bad one about 6 years ago and another in which a girl died about 10 years ago.
Watching the broken white line on the clip again, that cam car hardly slows down as he gets into the fog, he was double lucky he didn't plough the car and then get flattened by the artic.

Lots of those kinds of accidents in the Netherlands too. I narrowly missed a big one by literally 5 minutes in 1990 near Breda on the A16. 101 cars, 8 dead, 27 wounded. It's even got it's own Wikipedia article ...

They're busier and have a lot more idiots as well. I'm pleasantly surprised at the skill of Irish drivers when I go home, it's so relaxing. North of England is just a frustrating place to drive some days.

Increasing traffic has led to these "smart" motorways too; hard shoulder becomes a driving lane in peak hours. There's nowhere to escape in an incident like this.

The ones that have a moving middle lane and no median are bonkers. Thankfully not too common.

    m50 skip flip trip

    skip to 45 seconds.

around the 50 second mark, keep an eye on lane 1 skip truck.
then lane 3 when you see the van and cars breaking.

    fullscreen would be beneficial.

Lid of the skip comes flying off nearly hitting 2 or 3 cars and sits in the right lane for lots of people to run over.

I would argue that the DashCam driver was partly responsible for this accident, he deliberately kept out over the white line to frustrate the BMW drivers earlier attempts to overtake, was driving at an unacceptably slow speed for much of his journey, then antagonised the BMW when he finally did get around him and verbally abused him. As a direct result of this I am sure the BMW driver was fuming and which caused him to drive at excessive speed and crash.

The dashcam driver though he owned the road and got jealous of the BMW and tried to frustrate him successfully, resulting in dangerous driving and an accident. His behaviour at the scene of the accident after was disgraceful. But as it was a BMW I guess good enough for him right?? Despite that BMW being around 15 years old and the Dashcam driving a newer more valuable car people will side with the dashcam man.

    WOW!!

was that you in the BMW by any chance? what a dickish statement to make, i was reading and waiting for the sarcastic punchline, but that is a shocking opinion to have

At the same time, it shows you how much safer cars are nowadays and how much other safety regulations have paid off.

In 1972, in similar conditions, from clear vision to driving into a grey blanket this was the result in The Netherlands:
Trucks with fuel and diesel and other chemicals getting up in flames

    c_prinsenbeek_250872_1.jpg

    13 fatalities, 26 injured

Still had a little giggle about the comments under that tweet with the video though.

On the same stretch of road as the one I narrowly avoided in 1990, the A16 to the west of Breda. It's a stretch of road that's very prone to sudden, extremely thick fog banks and because of this they had installed an early warning system to warn motorists of upcoming fog. Didn't help on that day in 1990 though. Our office was right next to the A16 and on that day we couldn't even see the motorway itself it was that thick.

I was actually thinking of that one in 1990 as i remember that one. The 72 one i dont.
Wasnt as bad in 1990 but still bad enough with a 8 fatalities

I'd actually also be of the opinion that the cam car driver was driving like a dick. He was deliberately blocking the BMW from overtaking. Slowing down to annoy him, and then moving towards the centre of the road and accelerating every time the BMW tried to pass. The BMW driver may have been a bigger dick, but that doesn't turn the cam car driver into a saint.
