I booked or July when they advertised a few months ago .I got my return flight to NYC for €184 total (booked one bag for return) At the time I priced aer lingus it was over €740 .I never eat on the plane anyway and always bring my iPad loaded with stuff to watch .These flights might be a bit out of the way but with the new transport links I think this will be a grand alternative .
Aer lingus have held the reins on pricing to the USA for far too long so I think they should be scared & maybe they'll have to actually now give some better fares .I actually laughed at aer lingus putting ads up about how you can do immigration this side and get a meal etc .Their food is terrible at the best of times and Norwegian actually are doing immigration here now too .norweigian might actually make it easier for families to afford the USA now .
I can't wait for my trip now & hopegully if prices are still there I'll book for Dec too and what I save against aer lingus will prob pay for my hotel

Worth considering that a taxi from JFK to Manhattan is about $60 each way, getting the air train with bags can be a bit of a pain. So hopping on a non-stop bus from Steward airport straight to Port Authority for $40 return makes this airport not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Now that is if you're not waiting too long on the bus, but with scheduled landing at 18:25 (from Shannon) and a bus at 19:45, it could be worse.

Only $35 for an uberPOOL from JFK to Manhattan

True, I've used it a few times, but you definitely want to be giving the driver a tip on top of that, so the price works out about the same.

If you are saving €200 to €250 on the flights then it can be well worth it.

Unless you are elderly or disabled managing say two bags on the air train and subway is hardly much of a task. The very short walk from the baggage collection to air tain in JFK T5 also makes it quite easy and its about about $7 dollars to anywhere on the subway line (including the cost of the airtrain).

Cork - Providence only €191 return over the Halloween break. Very tempting!

That's generalisation as usual from you roll eyes

Changing lines in the subway with 23kg bags at rush hour and in times of high temperature (a lot) isn't the most enjoyable experience.

Plus, the subway line you take into Manhattan is seriously dodgy. Last time I took it, two fights almost broke out within a few minutes of one another within a meter of me. Including one lady kicking another woman and two big dudes nearly going at it!

I've travelled on public transport all over the world and I've never seen anything like it. I definitely wouldn't take this line at night, which is why I always go UberPool to JFK now and I'd caution others to do the same at night.

BTW It is the same subway line from the Ghostbusters movie where the lady says on seeing a ghost: "I guess he's going to Queens - he's going to be the third scariest thing on that train." Having used it a few times now, I totally understand what they mean.

I wouldn't recommend taking it and neither would most NYers.

Do you not use the LIRR and change at Jamaica station for the Air Train?
I was on that a few times day and night and it seems sound and nothing dodgy about it.

A lot of people get the e train subway from Jamaica, and as someone who stays in Queens a lot, I take it a lot. It is Dodge as ****.

There's a choochoo, $12 from the airport to Boston

AFAIK it's only Mon-Fri trains that call at the airport, weekends you have to get to Providence Rail Station

More sale flights Oct-Mar from €180 return.
You can reduce it to €173 by buying two one-way flights

Anyone hire a car from stewart airport? I see budget seems to be in the terminal, im looking to go to Woodlawn Heights in Bronx so it seems to be a handy enough drive from the airport! Anyone else do this trip, any advice?

Yes we did exactly that. It was good. Stewart Budget staff were very flexible and friendly. We drove through Manhatten to Brooklyn so scarier than to the Bronx but great experience.

Not to go off topic too much, but as accommodation is notoriously expensive in New York, can anyone recommend some good value hotels? A good balance between location/ price. Is there any good value to be had using the third party websites? Any other tips appreciated!

There's a new Pod Hotel Times Square opening.

I stayed in the Gallivant before which sometimes has price drops.

Also there's a new Hilton opening around times square.

I am heading at the end of September for few days and booked a room here:

    https://www.nuhotelbrooklyn.com/

    Used hotels.com with 10% code.

    Many codes floating around.

I always find hotels.com more expensive, maybe i'm wrong.

Have you tried this for booking.com it's still working.

I was thinking about that but after calculation the price was very similar (+/- 5Euro)

I just came back (and flew Norwegian- very good for the price btw). We stayed in the Hyatt Regency Jersey city for 140 euro/night. It is right beside PATH station, 5 mins, 1 stop, to World Trade Center. Great views of Manhattan included.

If your looking at location and price i found Hotel Pennsylvania unbeatable..straight across the road from Penn Station/Madison Square Garden so your anywhere you want to go in minutes on the subway. Pay the bit extra for the 'Penn 5000' rooms..not 5 star luxury but certainly the best value for the price we paid. ROW NYC is also good but found it to be more expensive than before on a recent check.

Trip Advisor reviews are horrendous for Pennsylvania Hotel, bed beds included, wifi not.

Stayed in Penn Hotel a few times and it's grand.Very central and a decent price not the lap of luxury but probably the beat value I have seen for a central location.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,695 ✭✭✭gizmo81

For my up coming three night stay i have a couple of reservations

Pod Times Square Not open yet €349

Hampton Inn Times Square North €416

Hilton Garden Inn Times Square Central €424

They are great prices for very central locations.

I knew as i was typing that post there would be someone along to slate the Penn haha but ive stayed there 3 times and as the other poster says its grand if your not too fussy. There are 1700 rooms so its bound to get a few bad reviews with that amount of guests to keep happy. Stayed there for a week for paddys day this year and arrived the day after the huge snow storm that hit the US east coast..the heat went on full in the room and wasnt turned off till we left so id say the bill for just that came close to what we payed and we definitely had WIFI.
On topic flew Dublin-Newburgh last week..was far more pleasant than we thought it would be..seemed like plenty more leg room than Ryanair/Aer Lingus for sure..plane was new so everything seemed new and clean..Coke/Fanta/Sprite $3 a can, Water $2.50 a bottle, Heineken $4.50 a can, Wine $6.50 per small bottle with various toasted sandwiches and salads from $6-$9..booked the meal on the way back..a proper chicken breast with various roast vegetables and mash potato..although small it was surprisingly delicious and they offered complimentary alcohol at least 2 or 3 times..2 american girls beside us had 4 wines each with their meal plus the two extras we got for them so the meal wasnt such bad value after all!

If your looking at location and price i found Hotel Pennsylvania unbeatable.

It's an unremittingly grim spot & tbh there are myriad other hotels that offer better bang for your buck & don't leave you feeling like you've just transited through an episode of the Twilight Zone.

Took a random date in Dec & found the Hampton Inn (one block from Macy's & the Empire State) for $3 more than the Penn or the newly opened Hilton Garden Inn Times Square South for $7 more. Take a look at Priceline's Express Deals, Hilton's MVP rate, IHG's Friends & Family rate detailed below.
