The usual health warning should apply, its a remote New York airport, bags and meals not included. Preclearance still not included but is wip.

My advice is make sure you do your homework and are comparing like with like. This is a great deal for some people but for others it will end up costing more than legacy carriers once everything is factored in.

Is preclearance definitely not included? Why?

    1st March - 5th March 2018 €192.30.

Express Bus Service available from when Norwegian Airlines flights start arriving $40 return not bad.

Pre-clearance is not a cert but the airports at the other end handle little international traffic and its not a large plane so its unlikely to be a major issue. You aren't connecting anywhere either which is the main advantage of CBP

The food onboard is limited (they offer pre-orders on 787 longhaul, doesn't seem they will on the 737s like this) and the food you can bring through CBP (if they do it) is even more limited. All drinks cost money, not even sure if you can get water free.

Free IFE will be a few tiny dropdown screens with the audio available on wifi, and not nessacerily even closely in sync. They have more stuff available for money though. No chargers so either bringing your own content or watching theirs may be difficult for the full flight

I wouldn't do this unless the price difference is huge or I was broke basically.

well, my sister in law lives 30 miles from Stewart airport where they fly in to, so for 99 euro each way to Dublin in July/August, this is definitely something she will be considering... even if she has to bring a packed lunch. Posh she is not!!!

If the preclearance is operating (which article linked above indicates) then she needs to be careful not to have prohibited food items

Would I pay €400 return for this, no. For €200, absolutely 😊

You just have to have the right mindset about this. Think of it more like Ryanair, then traditional full service airline

Bring only a carry on bag, bring a packed lunch and water with you and bring an iPad or similar with a few movies on it and you won't notice the time fly buy and will save yourself a few hundred euros.

I'd rather spend the extra €250 on a nice restaurant in Manhattan then crappy airline food!

Thanks again OP, I'm booked for Providence in September :)

I've flown with British Airways before and ended up lumped on an American Airlines 737, no in flight entertainment, wasn't accommodated to sit beside who I was travelling with and was given a meal that I would have sent back at McDonalds. I'll be delighted going onto this flight expecting nothing knowing that I saved a fortune because of it!

Another thing worth noting, their US flights have free cancellation within the first 24 hours of booking, so no harm in going for it now and thinking about it later. Beware though that cancellations have to be made with their phone department, I'm sure that might be slightly painful (maybe not though)

    Great prices alright.

Was only in New York in April, so looking at Boston.

Would you guys recommend it for a few days traveling? Solo traveler here.

How easy is it to get from PVD to downtown Boston? Had a look online but couldnt find much, which I'm guessing means it's probably not that easy without renting a car?

There is a bus from TG Green airport to Boston South:

Peter Pan busses run 5 services a day from the airport by the look of it. Roughly $32 each way

These fares dont include any luggage at all, so there is no cabin bag in the price and it is 44 each way top add a cabin bag and 55 each way to add a checked bag.

With a cabin bag it will cost 288 return which is still very decent.

1 carry-on bag: max. 55x40x23 cm, 1 small personal item: max. 25x33x20 cm. Max. combined weight: 10 kg

Cheese sandwiches are about all you'll get through preclearance on the way back if they're in a particularly officious mood.

Wow are the airline with a charge for cabin bags, Norwegian don't seem that bloody minded yet!

If anything, Norwegian seem to be spurring Aer Lingus into having more transatlantic sales, which may be of use too

I have seen Dublin to JFK for only €397 with Aer Lingus. Even if you don't fly Norwegian, they are driving down Aer Lingus prices

Booked Dublin-Providence return for €200 in August. Says flight leaves from T1 so no CBP pre-clearance it would seem. Costs 90 quid to add a bag, but still great price!

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭J.pilkington

    Found something very positive!

If you book the middle fare you get a check in bag, meal (prob a mini one) and seat choice, but the best thing is you can choose emergency exit seats at no extra cost.

So you can get flights to their NYC airport for €330 which includes bag, emergency exit seats, pre clearance and a meal. They also mention wifi but that sounds too good to be true. Not too bad in fairness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,168 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Wifi will probably fail somewhere across the Atlantic unless they've put the kit from the 787s on the 737s. Its uselessly slow anyway. Don't expect to watch anything on it, its barely possible to read text emails. That said the paid wifi on some airlines is just as bad!

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 23,457 Mod ✭✭✭✭bk

The type of Wifi Norwegian has is actually satellite based, so it would continue to work over the Atlantic, unlike the ground based one that US airlines use.

I've used it to Norway and it was great. Yes not fast enough for video, but fine for boards, Facebook, etc. So a good way to distract you for a few hours.

However I thought that Norwegian had already announced that the aircraft on these routes won't have the wifi hardware on the aircraft.

Btw one other think to be aware of, these are narrow body 737 aircraft like Ryanair use, rather then the more spacious widebody aircraft people might have been use to on transatlantic.

True, but you have as much of a chance getting a narrow body 757s on transatlantic as you have getting a wide body, especially in the offpeak months

Yes if you fly from Shannon. However if you fly from Dublin you'll only likely be on a 757 off peak to Hartford, Washington or Newark. During the summer the 757s fly from Dublin to Hartford and Washington.

Most of the us airlines use 757s off peak and some continue to do even at peak times

€330 for Norwegian is not worth it. Especially when Aer Lingus is only €70 more most of the year.

I booked or July when they advertised a few months ago .I got my return flight to NYC for €184 total (booked one bag for return) At the time I priced aer lingus it was over €740 .I never eat on the plane anyway and always bring my iPad loaded with stuff to watch .These flights might be a bit out of the way but with the new transport links I think this will be a grand alternative .
Aer lingus have held the reins on pricing to the USA for far too long so I think they should be scared & maybe they'll have to actually now give some better fares .I actually laughed at aer lingus putting ads up about how you can do immigration this side and get a meal etc .Their food is terrible at the best of times and Norwegian actually are doing immigration here now too .norweigian might actually make it easier for families to afford the USA now .
I can't wait for my trip now & hopegully if prices are still there I'll book for Dec too and what I save against aer lingus will prob pay for my hotel

Worth considering that a taxi from JFK to Manhattan is about $60 each way, getting the air train with bags can be a bit of a pain. So hopping on a non-stop bus from Steward airport straight to Port Authority for $40 return makes this airport not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Now that is if you're not waiting too long on the bus, but with scheduled landing at 18:25 (from Shannon) and a bus at 19:45, it could be worse.

True, I've used it a few times, but you definitely want to be giving the driver a tip on top of that, so the price works out about the same.

If you are saving €200 to €250 on the flights then it can be well worth it.

Unless you are elderly or disabled managing say two bags on the air train and subway is hardly much of a task. The very short walk from the baggage collection to air tain in JFK T5 also makes it quite easy and its about about $7 dollars to anywhere on the subway line (including the cost of the airtrain).

That's generalisation as usual from you roll eyes

Changing lines in the subway with 23kg bags at rush hour and in times of high temperature (a lot) isn't the most enjoyable experience.

Plus, the subway line you take into Manhattan is seriously dodgy. Last time I took it, two fights almost broke out within a few minutes of one another within a meter of me. Including one lady kicking another woman and two big dudes nearly going at it!

I've travelled on public transport all over the world and I've never seen anything like it. I definitely wouldn't take this line at night, which is why I always go UberPool to JFK now and I'd caution others to do the same at night.

BTW It is the same subway line from the Ghostbusters movie where the lady says on seeing a ghost: "I guess he's going to Queens - he's going to be the third scariest thing on that train." Having used it a few times now, I totally understand what they mean.

I wouldn't recommend taking it and neither would most NYers.

Do you not use the LIRR and change at Jamaica station for the Air Train?
I was on that a few times day and night and it seems sound and nothing dodgy about it.

Yes we did exactly that. It was good. Stewart Budget staff were very flexible and friendly. We drove through Manhatten to Brooklyn so scarier than to the Bronx but great experience.

Not to go off topic too much, but as accommodation is notoriously expensive in New York, can anyone recommend some good value hotels? A good balance between location/ price. Is there any good value to be had using the third party websites? Any other tips appreciated!

There's a new Pod Hotel Times Square opening.

I stayed in the Gallivant before which sometimes has price drops.

Also there's a new Hilton opening around times square.
