Selling car in public carpark

I'm thinking of putting my car in the local town carpark with a for sale sign up. Is this illegal, I recall reading in the past it was illegal as it was often a sign of people arranging illegal racing....

Yes, it is illegal and the car can be seized....

Nothing to do with illegal racing, it's to stop dealers using the public road as an extension of their showrooms and clogging up the streets, especially the backstreet boys with limited street frontage.

If it won't sell on Donedeal you won't sell it.

I thought there might be a warning before getting it towed away......My car is 3 year old and in mint condition, they will know i'm not a ted in the shed....how about parking it on private property, say on a filling station forecourt? Is that down to just seeking permission of the petrol station holder

Have you tried to sell it by placing any ads?

It actually depends on weather the public car park is maintained by a road authority or not. It isn't illegal in a public place, rather it's illegal on a public road.

A petrol station won't be happy with you taking up their property.

What car is it? Very few people will buy a 3 year old car in a private sale, never mind if the owner won't advertise it on the site everyone checks.

Ye its a county council carpark i plan to park it. Put it there after 6 when pay parking finishes and collect it around 10 again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 734 ✭✭✭bs2014

Also, I might put it on donedeal at the weekend but my previous experience with donedeal is people will want the car for next to nothing and then not buy it. My car is a Leon FR and its in showroom condition, the diamond cut wheels are as new and inside not so much as a hairline scuff. When people physically see the car, they will appreciate it. Once they look at it on donedeal, they will just look at the cheapest similar car on the net, wherever that is in the country and regardless of condition and then look for my car for my less. Hense why I'm trying to avoid the donedeal route for the time being.

    In which case it's illegal.

The council still wouldn't be very sympathetic. Though the way they drag their feet on this type of thing, it's more likely that they will write to the registered owner asking him to desist rather than lift the car.

So if he's only doing it in the evenings when pay parking finishes and the council wardens won't be policing the car park, he'll probably get away with it.

Can a car park be considered a 'road'?

People don't go to public car parks to buy cars. Put it up on a reputable website with a minimum offer. Adverts has worked for me a couple of times.

Yes, as can any bridge, pipe, arch, gully, pavement, fence, railing or pretty much any structure related to pedestrian or motor use on our roads.

People incorrectly think of "road' as being the parts that vehicles use, that's incorrect.

I sold my Peugeot 607 very easily a few years ago. There was an "Ideal Homes & Motor show" type event on in town. I went down early, found a prime location where everyone had to pass on the way from the carpark to the show. Put "For Sale" sign on the window with details & my phone number. Car was only there for about an hour when I got a call. First guy who called bought the car. It was in a private car park near the event centre.

    Lucky or what,

    T.

My car was smashed up doing this.

Was it 3 years old car worth several thousands euro?

If I was looking for a car like that I would look on Donedeal.

Paper on the windscreen attracts limited audience anyway - what are the odds that a person passing by is thinking of buying that particular car?

It only works with cheap runarounds for few hundreds, not with an almost brand new car.

Who in their right mind would pay €20k for a car they found with a handmade 'For Sale' sign in a public car park at night?? OP, if you think you've got a better chance at selling it this way than you do on Carzone or DoneDeal then you've well and truly lost the plot. It's hard to believe this is actually your preferred method and you're considering doing this before you've even advertised it online

If you're insisting on doing it illegally then you'd have more luck raffling the thing off on Facebook.

More than it's worth if they won't advertise it on the sites where people go to buy cars.

    2014 Seat Leon Fr

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/result/cars/keyword/leon%2520fr/make/seat/model/leon/min-year/2014-141/max-year/2014-142

find what a dealer is charging for a similar car of similar spec and subtract what a warranty and (perhaps perceived) peace of mind is worth. Factor in availability of finance, trade in's etc that a dealer can offer which allow him to charge that little extra..

No one is going to part what that much money for a car being sold in a carp park.

Condition does have an impact on value but not to the extent you may think and the differential gets narrower and narrower the closer to pristine you get.

Thanks for your constructive response....I actually already did phone a dealer to get a better idea of price. My plan is to park in carpark for few days and then do donedeal after the weekend

Heading to Tesco later... have my shopping list here..

    Bread
    Milk
    Eggs
    3 year old Seat Leon...

Honestly, who decides to buy a car like that? Maybe something you are trying to shift for under 500e but anyone that wants to spend 15k+ on a car will probably take the time to scan over carzone, donedeal etc..

Skip the carpark and go straight to donedeal.

Waste of time really... It will only draw attention of the people you don't want attention from.

Avoid donedeal like the plague. Donedeal is for bargain hunters.. Not your market..

At the value of your car spend the little extra and go with carzone or equivalent..

Donedeal is a market leader for private sellers.

    Carzone is for dealers.

This is perfect timing - I thought I had drove around all the carparks in Dublin looking for a mint condition 3/4 yo Leon FR - then randomly this thread appears! What are the chances!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,277 ✭✭✭km991148

Seriously tho - you are also risking serious damage to the car by leaving it necessarily in a public place for far longer than it has to be. Online is the only place really. If you don't like the price, then it is unfortunate as its only worth what people are willing to pay.

I would run a mile from a 3yo car in a carpark with a for sale sign - just looks dodge.

If you have trouble selling a car on DoneDeal, either your price is too high, or, well, that's it. Anything from a 2 month old S Class to a 20 year old Fiesta will sell on Donedeal if it's priced according to market value. EVERY SINGLE person I've spoken to who has had trouble selling their car there had it priced over the odds.
