Here's the link - Yates to present Newstalk Drive

So is this cos Chris might be heading to TV3, in some kind of Vinb replacement show?

Wow. Wonder if the rest of the schedule will be changed.

Fantastic news! I'd almost given up on Newstalk ... I'll look forward to listening to Ivan on the way home from work. I would like Chris to stay on though, they work well together.

now to get the mornings sorted

I like Chris and Sarah but this is a great move for NT. I rarely find myself agreeing with Ivan Yates but, unlike George Hook, Yates is a very professional broadcaster who's always quick to the to the crux of a political issues and does some great analysis.

    Excellent news altogether.

Oh guys, I really hope Williams and Quinlan get the door too. NT Breakfast has been unbearable for the last year.

Great to hear that the loveably cantankerous old git is back weekdays. I hope Chris is kept as Ivan works well off him.

    As for Sarah; cheerio.

I've been listening to Nick Ferrari 7-10am on LBC for the last 6 months. Sure it's all English stuff but far more interesting than the BS on Newstalk and Nick is an excellent presenter. First heard him doing a segment on Matt Cooper

About time someone in Newstalk realised this was a good move. I've nothing against Chris or Sarah, but the format of the show just does nothing for me so was always drawn to Cooper.

With Yates on now Newstalk have someone that can take listeners from both Drivetime and The Last Word.

i wonder how Ivan will put up with Ger Gilroy's horsesh1t opinions when he's doing links for off the ball?!

I agree with you, he is a great broadcaster. I got to speak to Nick Ferrari a few years ago, he's a sound guy. I listen to his contributions to Matt Cooper's programme but the politics/current affairs junkie in me makes me loyal to Irish radio :o

Yates is a very professional broadcaster

Neither in fact or in impression is that true, not up against a MacCoille, O'Rourke, Lawlor or Carville. To my mind only Chris Donoghue and Shane Coleman have much current affairs credibility on NT

Yes, he has insider experience, no he cannot keep his personal biases out of anything. IMO he's not too far off Hook in the blowhard stakes.

Donoghue and McInerney offered variety against Wilson and Cooper and were finding their feet with an appeal among the younger ABC1 listeners. Yates is a just about a poor mans Cooper and will struggle if alone over 3 hours.

I don't know what it is about Communicorp and their constant tinkering on their radio stations before formats have even had decent traction.

Agree. Yates is fine when it comes to banter and bluster but most of the time he is poor on detail. In fairness to Chris D, he was able to provide the details and Ivan the entertainment.

Not sure how well Yates will do with a 3 hour slot time in a more "serious" afternoon slot. I think he needs a sidekick to do the heavy-lifting (a la Donoghue).

Donoghue and McInerney wasn't working, but I don't put the blame on that on Donoghue.

Yates is brilliant on politics, he knows the game and he offers interesting insights into the workings of Dáil Éireann. I used to enjoy his take on things when Enda and the government would find themselves in hot water...... he's miles ahead of the likes of Michael O'Regan.

If the programme is going to work, he will need Chris or Kieran Cuddihy. The slagging and banter is a vital part of any show.

Sarah will be highly offended at this move I bet. How dare newstalk infringe on her human rights in this way................or something like that.

She needs to go, so easily offended is our Sarah.

The irony with this is brilliant considering most posts here seem to be by people offended by her opinions.

Expect a major frenzy about "gender equality" NT have gone from having 2 women on the week day schedule last September to 0 women this September

2 posts in a row harping on about women on the radio? Maybe it's you that has the problem?

I am just waiting for Sarah to play the gender card. She is just awful in that slot, and not suited at all to radio IMO. Good move by Newstalk. Now take the knife to the poor morning schedule.

    Absolutely fantastic news.

Bye bye Sarah. Did anyone hear her "interviewing" Jeffrey Donaldson yesterday? Absolute car crash, umm-ing and ahh-ing her way through it.

I dont agree that Yates need a sidekick for banter. He's beendoing great on Yates on Sunday. Far more incisive than Marian Finucane is.

    Its a genuine concern.

50% of the population are female, and we're yet to see whether there will be any female presenter of a weekday show on NT.

If the gender representation were reversed, there would be a lot more than the raised eyebrows you're currently seeing. The station would be dismissed as Women FM, or some such.

I for one won't miss her mumbling bumbling delivery and her bias feminist agenda she is always applying to every situation. Back in yer box lass!

It seems to be already by some whenever there's a woman on the show.

A woman can be an awful radio presenter for reasons that aren't related to her gender.

    I never said contrary.

The sooner the silly season is over the better. The morning show is almost down to what's your favourite colour,Chris and Sarah are barely distinguishable from 2FM.

While not full time, Dr. Ciara Kelly seems to be on 24/7. Trying to get an appointment in her surgery must be a nightmare!

She was on TV3's 6 O'Clock Show yesterday.

I think she good on Newstalk. Not great, but good. Would like her to get a decent role, maybe on breakfast.

Ivan put over 100,000 listeners on Newstalk's Breakfast Show JNLRs. He's the stations biggest draw. Commercially this is a complete no-brainer. I just surprised it has taken this long for it to happen.

I do feel a bit sorry for Chris though. Maybe he'll go back to breakfast.
