Sorry to hear about that Joe. I've heard of a mate whose R-Line Volvo suffered the same fate.
    People are the worst.

Followed up on my order; should be incoming in early/mid september, the car is leaving the factory next week but shipping details are TBC.
Should be 12 weeks or less from order to collection, which is pretty good.
Hopefully there will still be a bit of a stretch in the evenings when it arrives.

Sorry to hear about the car Joe. It's terrible having worked hard to treat yourself to a nice motor to have some degenerate low life come along and cause that kind of damage at your home.

Imagine what owning a Supercar in Ireland must be like!

Probably safer, unfortunately. Much less chance of the same kind of opportunist owning a similar car to nick the pieces they want to stick on to!

Condolences Joe, it's something that's always in the back of my mind also but there's pretty much literally nothing you can do about it.

    Thanks fellas.
The incident has shook me up a bit (not to mention the wife). It's not even the car... it's the fact that some low life degenerate thought it was A-OK to skunk about on my driveway in the middle of the night and vandalise my property. It's a real "invasion", if that makes any sense. Looking into beefing up my house alarm today. We have a very old (non-monitored) alarm and I'm tempted to get that upgraded to something modern now.

Sorry to add more non-GTI/R discussion but does anyone have experience haggling the price of a car that had a price drop? The Highline I ordered has dropped by €1,000 so the haggling I doesn't save much. The salesperson is to call me back today about the price. I think I could have got more off the original cost so I think even with the price drop there's room to come down a bit more.

Has anyone been in this situation before?

Are you saying the recommended retail price has dropped? How did you hear is there a new brochure out with prices?

On their website the price listed, at least for the 5 door 1.0 DSG, is less than the RRP in the brochure. When I mentioned the brochure price Vs the price listed he said he'd look into it. Not sure if that price is a mistake or not but it would be strange to change it in the website? I didn't compare prices of other models.

Are you sure you aren't leaving out the delivery charges in your calculations? The product / price guide PDF is usually the best place to see what the real price is, including delivery, which is about €775 I think. Brochures / ads / websites often leave out that delivery charge.

Yeah, it's the first thing the salesperson said. The price I got was done using the RRP on the brochure, plus extras, excluding delivery charge. I double checked it with my order paperwork to be sure, price of the car used was the brochure RRP. I thought it was worth a mention.

Yeah there is a €1000 difference between the site and the brochure...seems to only apply to the 1.0L. 1.4L is unchanged. Both prices are before delivery charges

Odd! Did the dealer get back to you yet?

Haven't heard back yet, I'll try call tomorrow and see what the story is. He said he wasn't aware of any price changes but had to look into it. I imagine if it was a mistake it would have been changed by now though as the salesperson said others have been looking for the 1.0 DSG.

Dropped the car in the service yesterday, which finished off at €487 ( which included 2 new front tires @ €115 each), wipers, €47, and the oil change and service its self. A tad expensive in the end.

Sorry to hear about the Car Joe... Those w**kers have no respect...

I was starting to talk myself into an R upgrade for 181, but I'm in two minds now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Exactly. I'd be slow to let a main dealer change tyres tbh. €115 sounds like ditch-finder territory too. I'd expect to pay 150+ for something decent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

No way I'd let them near Tyres. You'd end up coming out with Barum's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 252 ✭✭Hebegeebee

Jaysus, €47 for wipers. That's saucy.
Mind you I have to buy 2 replacement stretch bolts for a job on my A4 and the dealer/stealer is charging me €10 for the 2 bolts!!

I'd also be interested in hearing what tyres for that price.

As a matter of interest considering moving on from my golf next year. Is it worth while selling privately, or are buyers more interested in getting a dealer car with a warranty?

Finding it hard to get a current second-hand market rate for a 161 1.4tsi, a good few 141s but with less spec and less power (not sure if power is a factor in determining price)

Safer? I doubt it. I'd be afraid to park it anywhere. Some jealous f3ckers would key scrape or try and steal parts from it too to sell.

In the context of the conversation and the pieces being taken from it on your driveway, I'd argue yes, it probably would be safer to have a unique car. People stealing bits off cars to sell happens a whole lot less than you would think, they mainly take bits off nicer trim level cars to stick onto their own lower spec model.

It would also be a lot harder to randomly and inconspicuously sell a pair of McLaren/Ferrari wing mirror covers on DoneDeal/Adverts than a set of Golf R ones. :p

My replacements landed in today. Dealer fitting them now as I type. I was going to DIY but they kindly offered. The tricky part is the glass has to come out and there's a knack to doing that without breaking it! Rather let the dealers break it than me...

You can remove/fit them without taking the glass out. You just need to put both of the mirrors in their lowest setting, it's only two clips inside towards the top of the housing that need to be released for the cover to pop off/on.

In your situation, I'd have let the dealers do it as well though. :)

Yep, but I had to get the frames replaced too (the front part of the frame that surrounds the glass) because the little sh1t(s) gouged both of them with a screwdriver when removing the caps. And to replace those, the glass had to come out.

    Anyway - all done!

Believe me, I've thought about that :pac:

If only the "aluminium" caps weren't actually plastic...

Pain in the ass where scobes take souvenirs off "desirable" cars. Makes you wonder about where you live too. I had one car which had 3 brand badges taken off it in the drive way one after the other, the little scuts damaged the paint in removing them too.

Yep. It was bad enough that they relieved it of the caps, but they also had to gouge the adjoining plastic frame too while they were at it. I've been counting my lucky stars that they didn't damage the paintwork. This time.

And yeah it certainly casts doubt on your perceived security in your own home. To$$ers.

@Joe - truly sickened for you but try not to let it dampen your gra for the car.

I've been MIA on this thread for some time now; things have changed around a bit here. I traded in my wifes MK5 GTI against a Range Rover Sport and my wife now drives the MK7 GTI. Its finally reached 34k kms recently and is due its first NCT. Something I'm finding incredibly difficult to believe. I recently drove it to get petrol and I have to say I found it super uncomfortable :o as I've been completely spoiled by the air suspension and high view point in the RRS. It also feels like a rocket ship now

Overall I think the Mk7 has been reliable, we've had a few issues though:
-Work had to be done on the petrol flap to stop it sticking
-We had the thermostat replaced (it failed open)
-Key batteries only seem to last 6 months or so
-The paint (oryx) is very soft/thin, I've had to touch up a few bits here and there from chips
-Cornering bulbs only lasted 18 months

Sorry to hear what happened Joe. Years ago my father had 1987 Passat estate, was new at the time. We went to england on holiday and visited an aunt. When we came out the front VW badge was missing and a few young girls running down the street with badge in hand LOL

Can someone enlighten me on how busy a dealership normally is? Left a voicemail to speak with a salesperson yesterday to discuss the price of the Golf because he didn't call me back on Monday and still haven't heard back.

Is it usually this much of a pain in the ass to talk to someone? The salesperson isn't the one associated with my sale so maybe he doesn't care. The person I was dealing with is on holiday is it best just to wait until he's back?

This is the third person I've dealt with. When I originally made the actual order it was a different salesperson because the one I was dealing with was off.

Are they possibly just busier than normal and my guy being on holiday making it a bit awkward? When I went to test drive the car I got a call as I parked up saying the car wasn't in and I'd have to wait for the next day, looking back I'm starting to see a pattern with a lack of communication.

I'm honestly not even hounding them. I waited two weeks between each of the 3 phone calls I've had and only called that many times because they didn't have a date. I have my date now so I'll wait until they call me to say the car is in but I did want to discuss the price drop. Simple request really.
