Jesus, can the word 'snowflake' be put out to pasture until it actually starts snowing again.

Does it make me a snowflake that it immediately makes me think someone is a tosser if they use the term derogatorily?

They use it on Off the Ball fairly regularly now don't they? :D
Make it is what the cool kids broadcasters bluffers say these days?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Ended up listening to 2FM's Game On yesterday for a bit, their horse racing contributor was Donn McLean. Exact same type and length feature as he does on OTB.

Surprised that one of them hasn't asked him to be exclusive.

Also, other racing journalists must feel a bit aggrieved that he picks up 2 such spots.

Gerry Thornley does OTB and 2nd Capt. He's good so I'd say both shows would rather share him than not have him at all.

Was there no appearance of the committee for surveillance of top sports teams and the amount of access they give to the media compared to 20 years ago?

    Not that I recall

    Oh my God.

It's not often I get to hear the newsround these days, and when I do the first bit of news is...Rory McIlroy's caddy.

    Flip sake.

  • Site Banned Posts: 12,341 ✭✭✭✭Faugheen

Well it's the same guy who's carried the bag for his entire professional career, so yes I would say it's a bigger story than when Roscommon and Mayo is going to be played.

Niamh Briggs being out of the World Cup would be a good lead too but Rory's caddy isn't that extraordinary in silly season...

Ah, I'm not blaming the show, but jeez talk about a slow news day.

It's a big enough story in my opinion. Are any of them brave enough to point out however that apart from not really being of concern to Irish people, McIlroy himself is a bit of a spoiled child. I find him hugely unlikeable but those OTB boys kneel at his altar. Is there a strata of society they are trying to avoid offending?

Joe and Nathan love Rory, so blinded by their love of him they won't have a bad word said about him.

Women's rugby? Though seriously who's interested?

A lot of people, actually, considering the World Cup is being held here and our captain has just been ruled out of it...

Could you quantify that for me? How many people attend the games? What are the viewing figures like?

    Are you serious?
So it's not as popular as other sports. They are the only Irish team to beat their NZ counterparts in a competitive match and the ladies game has come in leaps and bounds in recent years.

If they didn't cover it there'd be people b*itching here that it was ignored.

Do you think only certain sports should be covered? Do you not see any merit in covering sports that might get more women interested in playing a sport?
Is it because it is rugby that you you have a problem with it?

Do they still put out the 'Off the Bench' podcast?

I'd hazard a guess that female participation is higher in both GAA and soccer.

Women's GAA gets coverage come championship time, soccer gets none. What are the viewing figures for women's rugby? Does it warrant the coverage it gets?

Do women watch women's rugby ? It would be interesting to see the viewing/listening figures for women watching male sports as opposed to female sports.

Not at all but I find it bizarre that an extremely minority support like women's rugby gets the air time it does. Live games in the spring in front of one man or woman and his/her dog top billing on sports news in August. I've no problem with any sport but I do question the amount of coverage certain sports seem to enjoy.

30 seconds commentary on the day the captain was ruled out of a home world cup hardly constitutes top billing.

actually, beside the point on women's rugby, this is what OTB is like anyway. motorsport is never mentioned on the show. the F1 races or the isle of man TT never get a mention at all. there's more feckin coverage of the darts around Christmas than both of them together throughout the year.

I think it's been mentioned that if you win the rights for the 6Nations coverage that you have to show both the U20's and the Women's comp.

In reality women's rugby doesn't get that much coverage.

I heard from a mate of mine that the matches for the WRWC are a sellout...

I've mentioned it here before, I don't watch women's rugby, I don't enjoy it. Yet I'll watch most rugby that'd be on be that provincial, international or top 14, will even watch some premiereship games. Maybe it's the physicality I don't like I just don't enjoy it, same with women's boxing. But I prefer watching women's tennis and women's skiing than the male versions. There the sports I watch most, athletics I like both sexes in all events.

I thought it got showed up badly a few years back when the Irish ladies played their home 6 Nations games in the Aviva following the mens game. The place cleared out as soon as the mens game was over, massive stadium practically empty.

I felt sorry for them, it couldn't have been good for morale. Obviously a major cockup from whoever devised such an idea.

But I think that is what is lost on the Off The Ball equality brigade. They try to brow beat the listener in to watching women's sports, purely for the reason that if you don't you are a sexist and oppressing women's sport. True equality would be being free to watch whatever sport you actually WANT to watch it. Not out of some sense of "fairness" that has been indoctrinated into you by the ALL MALE team at Off The Ball.

Yet there's barely a whisper about any other womens' sport. The reason for that is market forces - i.e. nobody is interested. Odd that women's rugby slipped through the net because it isn't at all popular, even among rugby supporters. And this isn't a typically male answer. My girlfriend is well into the rugby but despises seeing women play the game.

Rowing is very much a minority sport, yet they devoted a whole road show to it last week. I know from family involvement that all the attention the O'Donovan brothers and Skibbereen Rowing Club is getting has seen a dramatic increase in those taking the sport up. Media attention can have a big impact on minority sports.

The biggest problems I have with OTB mark II is how formulaic is compared to the old lot. Football, Rugby, GAA and a bit of golf thrown in to keep Joe happy. It hardly deviates from this like it used to and I think suffers quite a bit because of it.

I heard a fair bit of that rowing one. I know very little about the sport, but that was the most worthwhile OTB I've heard in quite a while.
