Another cherry bargain! tesco have 250g punnets of really lovely cherries for 1 euro at the moment, they are called Suntrail Farms picota cherries - get them before I buy them all :P

Bought these today, they are a different variety to the Lidl ones, they look smaller and less ripe but I bet they're damn tasty! I don't know much about cherries really.

There's not much to know, other than that they're delicious. :D
We landscaped the garden this year, and I planted a cherry tree. Can't wait to get the first fruit off it, and I'll set the cats on any blackbird trying to steal them!

Guys and girls, I bought my first ever Galia melon today (I know, I know it's pathetic) but how do I know when it's ripe?

When you squeeze it there will be a little 'give' - and also it will smell of melon, so give it a sniff. They're much more flavoursome than honeydews :)

I planted one last year and got about 5 cherries this year. Sour. So, so sour. I'm hoping I picked them too early, or it's because it's the tree's first fruit.

I suspect with the lack of sunshine here, they may need to stay on the tree longer - maybe to mid-July? In Germany we'd start picking them in late June.

They weren't bright red and lightly transparent looking, by any chance? Cause those would be sour cherries. Great for jams and canning, really really not great for eating fresh.

Anyone any ideas on what to do with it?

Hi Dizzyblonde, where do you get the jars with the checkered lids?

this place sells the jars and caps separately. I collect old jars I use, the lids tend to be standardised so many will fit other jars. If it was a jar of curry sauce or minced garlic then the lid will be tainted though, and unsuitable to store say jam or anything other than curry again!. So you might want new lids but the glass jar would be fine once well washed.

My niece thought they were delicious, while I made any number of humorous faces from the sourness, so it may just be a matter of taste.

I prefer tart cherries to sweet ones in baking anyway, so it'll all turn out ok in the end, when I get a decent crop.

I've just seen that there's a WOW burger opening in the Square soon and I'm very excited. I've a friend who maintains it's better than Bunsen so will have to test this theory as soon as it opens. For science, you understand.

Someone on another forum got some and was planning to make this:

I think it looks delicious but I stress that I haven't made the recipe myself :)

I think Binging with Babish on Youtube did that.

I love that channel: sexy arms and able to cook...

Lucky you!, was given some last year,
They are lovely roasted, really sweet! I made some roasted black garlic oil last year, and have to say it was the nicest thing , drizzled over salads, dipping bread, anything, would love to get some more of it, :)

Lid'd new website is just terrible - another mobile friendly design that nearly kills desktop browsers.

I know, it's a right pain, especially after the bloody awful aldi website redesign which makes finding everything a tiresome chore :(

If you want to, it wouldn't be a bad idea to email lidl support with your browser version and the issues you're seeing. Obviously every browser should have been fully tested before the rollout of the new site but they might have missed the particular version of the one you have and no harm in letting them know it's causing trouble.

Thanks to a generous Boardsie with gooseberries to spare I've been able to make more jelly.
This time with green gooseberries, and the jelly still turned out a wonderful colour. It tastes every bit as nice as it looks :)

I'm so excited! I finally ordered replacements for my beloved and sadly worn out dmt diafold whetstone; hands down the best tool I've ever used for getting a really really good edge on my knives. Not having one has actually meant I've been cooking less because my knives just aren't pleasant to use at the moment - you know that horrible feeling when a knife dents the skin of a tomato instead of cutting cleanly and easily through it?

    Ugh :(

edit: I'm getting these ones: https://www.amazon.co.uk/DMT-W7EFC-Diamond-Whetstone-Stone-x/dp/B00004WFTD
    Pros: Full set of coarse/medium/fine
    Cons: Pretty small
If I had lots of money I'd get the big set:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Advanced-Quality-Diamond-Whetstone-Sharpening/dp/B00IEHT5PC/ref=sr_1_2?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1500485600&sr=1-2&keywords=dmt+whetstone+set
but I am not quite ready to drop £185 on whetstones right now.

    Hi lads and ladies!

I bought a three-pack of flat field mushrooms today for my other half. He loves mushrooms but funnily enough we've never bought these big ones.

I want to make him a nice brunch tomorrow (he hasn't been well) but looking at some recipes online, I'm not entirely sure what to do.

Something in my mind is telling me to fry off onion and bacon and do something with breadcrumbs and cheese and grill 'em?
Do I cut the stems off the mushrooms?

Would someone be able to walk me through a simple grilled mushroom recipe that's tasty and not too calorific as my partner has to watch his cholesterol (we do have low-fat cheddar though!).

Thank you so much in advance!

PS I have smoked bacon medallions/onions/peppers and lots of herbs and spices in the cupboard.

I'd do exactly that. I'd cut off the stems, chop them up with a small amount of onion, garlic and medallions. Stuff the mushrooms and top with bread crumbs and cheese. Blue cheese is lovely on top of them.

The mushrooms will take a while to cook so putting under the grill won't be enough. They will need to be cooked in the oven and become very tasty. I can't remember for how long but not that long! Enjoy!

I was given a tray of meatballs from the butcher today but there's no sauce in it.Can I just put the tray in the oven or will they dry out and would you serve with pasta and pasata or what sauce? Thanks

Put the tray in the oven to cook, the oils in the meat will prevent dying. Cook your spagetti and heat the sauce, you can add the meatballs to the sauce then and pour over the pasta. That's what I do anyway. You can always fry off the meatballs but cooking in the oven ensures they are cooked right through.
Edit Pasata would be bland, you could try a jarred sauce with peppers or something or make your own. If the meatballs are spicy try a less spicy sauce.

My Thermapen arrived today. I'm having to resist the urge to cook lots of rare steaks - I don't even like full on rare anyway!

    Hi all,

Heading to Dublin next month for a night with Mrs. Loire. Can anyone recommend a decent restaurant? Somewhere with a good buzz and really good food. Not really looking for white linen rather something more relaxed but very good. Last time we went to Fade St Social and somewhere like that would be perfect. Also, if anyone could recommend somewhere close by with decent cocktails that would be good too!

    Thanks!

Went to Pichet and loved it. Had a lovely terrine to start and a whole lobster for mains. Herself also had the terrine and organic salmon for mains. The food and vibe were spot on and (as I am getting on) the chairs were really comfortable. Highly recommended.
