Given our inability to put even average teams away and yet out never say die attitude, maybe the game against Roscommon has extra time written all over it again. I still suspect Roscommon will have more in the tank than us.

I'm hoping for another war of attrition, really gets the juices flowing.

What will happen next year at the end of extra time if it is still a draw? 45 kicks for points or penalties :)

I'd love to see 45 kicks to settle it. Would encourage it as a skill. Probably penalties though. Good question though, anyone know of a GAA game settled this way? The 4 game meath v Dublin epic didn't have it. I bet the GAA love those games that keep going to a replay. They rake in the money.

You'll need the raincoat for row N in the Cusack I reckon. Looking like showers/rain for Sunday afternoon. I'm in 326 LL (corner Hogan/Canal End) myself.

    Haha yeh.

The Kerry pundits are on to us. And there was us trying to sneak under the radar with a couple of low key performances.

    Good article though.

If people don't read the O Se's with their tongue in their cheek it's their own fault I reckon, especially Darragh.

Generally, he's always balanced and fairly accurate when it comes to talking about Mayo

You are being a tad naive if you think that crowd are ever fair and balanced about anything they say about Mayo....or Dublin or Tyrone for that matter. They always have an agenda. Always !

Remember, just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you. :p

I've actually realised I haven't posted since the Cork game. What a match, we won't appreciate how good a game that was until a few years pass I reckon. Some top performances again from O'Shea, Andy Moran, Cillian, Harrison and more.

The last two games I gave Aidan O'Shea his own special paragraph, this time Jason Doherty gets it. What a performance. Not a scoring performance but brilliant half forward play, winning ball, being a link man and being tough as f*ck in general winning turnovers and breaks. Top stuff. And fair play to Rochford for including him from the start, all I see in here is criticism of Rochford - well starting Doherty ahead of Loftus was a big call and it paid off. And when you consider Loftus came on and kicked two big points as an impact sub, and Paddy Durcan the other impact sub kicked two big points then you have to give Rochford credit. This started off as a Jason Doherty tribute paragraph but it's turned into a Rochford one! :pac:

I also fear Roscommon. But its almost a fear of the unknown more than a fear of Roscommon. Its been a strange/brilliant football championship. Galway beat Mayo, then get whupped by Roscommon who were total underdogs after a terrible league campaign, then Galway go and hammer Donegal spectacularly. Were Galway really that bad and able to turn it around in 6 days with 3-4 changes to the team or are Roscommon actually a really good team who have finally clicked after their underage success? Has McStay just needed that 2nd year to iron things out and get them going as he needs? Did they approach the league with only championship in mind and did that lead to their terrible league performance? They are a strange team these past couple of seasons Roscommon. Especially after getting to the Division One semi finals in 2016 we know they can beat big teams. Jesus, I really don't know. Add in the effect of Mayo playing 3 games in 2 weeks with two going to extra time.... does that bring momentum and confidence or tiredness and fatigue?

Mayo v Roscommon is going to be a fascinating fixture, hopefully one where Mayo can come out on top again.

    Agree with you on Doherty

He is brilliant in the center winning "dirty ball" as they call it, and setting up attacks.

If Mayo do get a chance to meet Kerry the best way to beat them is to run at them, down the middle, and having the likes of Doherty to win possession and start those runs is essential.

I certainly think Roscommon we're willing to sacrifice the league for a good run in Connacht.

They knew from last October that they were a win v Leitrim or London away from a final place so they put a lot of eggs in that basket and it paid off, it helped that Galway were complacent also.

But I think that's as far as it goes.

Mayo having had a long evening in Limerick a week before may help their cause a little but not too much I don't think.

Could you imagine if Galway bet Kerry beforehand. It'll crank things up to another level altogether.

After all the problems with starting slow this year, I would like to see us go out there and slow things down for the start. Something we're well capable of doing. I don't think the previous games will take a huge toll as long as it's not hell for leather from the start.

The 2013 Final was on eir a few nights ago. Probably the worst thing to see with all the doubts over Caff. McStay will have a plan to expose that, I hope we have one to counter it. Barry Moran for sweeper :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,286 ✭✭✭seligehgit

Yes we successfully used Barry as a sweeper against Donegal in 2015 but who would you drop?Just curious.:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,133 ✭✭✭Shurimgreat

Well if Barry Moran was half decent on the ground you could use him as a sweeper that way too. He's not the worst in fairness. So possibly drop Higgins? I'm thinking more if we met Kerry, but again, can't write off losing to the Rossies.

Would be best imo at this stage to create a specialist position for B Moran, available for kickouts but minding the half back line to compensate for Cafferky and the time Keegan spends attacking.
I'd drop a forward to accommodate same.
That's my honest opinion on it, two negatives
1)Keegan is a great player and man marker it leaves a gap in the half-back line
    2) Mayo have yet to produce a player with enough skills to cover the array of challenges thrown at no 3.

Tyrone and Dublin have fixed similar issues with creative use of players and disciplined positioning of intelligent players, IMO Mayo could do the same.

Long ball aside the undoing of Mayo in the replay last year was imo creative play around the Mayo half-back line

And in last years Semi against Tipp... more of a protector of the FB's than a sweeper iirc. I wasn't really serious, I would doubt that he could be match fit.

BUT, if Tom is injured. It could be a straight(ish) swap. In for Tom, let him protect the FB line and win kickouts as Stoner suggests. Let the O'Sheas off in the middle.
