Glandore always strikes me as where the townie wealthy folk think is deep west cork, 3 minutes further on in union hall is proper west cork. Glandore isn't a place I could describe as pretty, mobbed in summertime, closed down in winter. Give me union hall any day of the week

meh, Union hall is where the French go and think they're in West Cork!:D
Castletownsend a few more Km on...

    a stone fort...

    Doolin-Clare
    mullaghmore-Sligo
    Leenane-Galway

All beautiful quaint places. Love going to them.

I was in Mullaghmore for the weekend, while it is among Ireland's most scenic villages, it doesn't have much architectural merit (apart from the harbour and castle).

Doolin was a stunning traditional settlement until the mid/late 1990s when I used to go there for the music and Inis Oirr. Somebody from Clare County Council should be up on environmental crimes for what has been permitted to be built there since. It's a free for all with every gombeen given permission to destroy the built heritage. No vision. No sense of, or respect for, the vernacular architecture.

Absolutely. Most of Doolin is rotten apart from maaaybe down by O Connors. It's in a stunning setting but the built environment is horrible. But it could be worse, you could be up the road in Lisdoon!

Feeling whatever the opposite of homesick is right now...

Wow, I'm all for tasteful pastel colours when painting houses but some of those are way over the top. Looks like a backdrop for a kids TV series.
    Bloody horrible, innit?

Forgot Castletownshend, very nice spot. Probably doesn't strictly qualify as a village (though it has a church, hotel and souvenir shop) but Gougane Barra is incredibly picturesque. The hills surrounding it are green again after the fires.

    Wow, Castletownsend looks beautiful!

The castle itself is a hotel, a little quirky but very interesting.

    Castletownshend is lovely.

Ballingeary, near Gougane Barra, is pretty. I kinda like villages where the main street kinda meanders around, like Eyeries.

its a city compared to Gougane Barra!

Think the "probably doesn't qualify as a village" was applied to Gougane, not Ctownshend.

Here's a random one. Kildorrery. It's always clean and neat, with great views. The only bit about the road to Dublin that's easy on the eye.

My favourites are St. Mullins in Carlow or Graiguenamanagh, but then I live close and think St. Mullins is the nicest place in earth for being close IYKWIM.

I absolutely adore Schull in Cork, my brother lived for for a time,

I drive from Inistioge to Bennetsbridge every day, whilst Inistioge is picturesque, especially early in the morning with the fog on the river, it's extremely popular as a holiday destination for a lot of Dubs.

If it's picturesque you are after, you can't beat the view from Nicholas Mosse Cafe overlooking the river and bridge, with the goats, swans, geese and cattle are vying for nature, the cafe is situated in an old Mill, and has the height for good photos,

Been thinking about where to go on our next road trip. Cork looks like a top contender right now. West cork?

Start in Clonakilty and head along the wild Atlantic way.
When you get to the border with Kerry, go home.

I'd like to think that any village in the country can be pretty as there is a uniqueness to the architecture here. It's the blasé attitude to litter that f's things up.

Up around Vico Road is breathtaking. On a sunny summer's day, it could be Italy.
