I wanted to buy a 3door cupra with the sub 8 performance pack on it, no go in Ireland unfortunately.
I've always liked seat styling, a bit more edgy than VW.

    Best of luck with it.

You know, that's the same spec and colour combo that I'm thinking of for the next car to replace the FR. I am debating on whether to get the hatch or the estate, just to be different................

    Oh, well wear also

is it the new 300bhp model?

I did consider the ST on pure looks alone as I think it is a great shape. But if I was to have gone with the ST I'd have HAD to go with the 4drive and then those pennies really start adding up.

To those who commented on the wheels...oddly enough its the one part of the car I'm not 100% keen on. Tad too fussy for my taste. Seems I am alone on this though as most comments from friends and family were that they liked them.

Horses for courses as they say :D

Ah the 4drive price is daft over the 2WD ST. It's the best part of €8k for a flappy paddle 'box and 4WD. I'd nearly prefer the limo in the 2WD and have more fun as the 4drive has open diffs front and rear.......

Just the dsg option is crazy here compared to every other European country. I did query this with Seat but got a canned reply like 'Pricing will vary from region to region' which means nothing.

Still, Cupra is a beast when needed and very comfy the rest of the time so I'm a happy bunny.

On the topic of sterling prices and someone mentioning the PP, I couldn't believe the DSG PP is more than double the price over the UK, then I saw that the GTI PP DSG is €35,100 in the UK and €43,360 here. The Golf R is €38,649 and €47,595 here!

I know cars are cheaper in the UK but jesus christ...you'd swear our dealerships just buy them retail from the UK and add tax onto them. I just find it hard to believe they're being bought from Germany then VAT and VRT added on? It's sickening, I absolute hate the cost of motoring here!

I'll still end up in a GTI or an R in a few years, but it would be a hell of a lot more affordable in the UK! We'd have so much more money to spend on petrol we wouldn't have to watch the MPGs on the commute to work.

Also that Seat is tasty looking!

I was looking at GTI/R pricing on the German site a couple of months back before the facelift and was surprised to see that when they were specced up to Irish levels they weren't massively cheaper than here, maybe 2-3k at most. I think they're just particularly cheap in the UK.

I did similar in Austria a while back and found the same. Was surprised to say the least, but it was slightly heartwarming. :D

You'd need your head tested to consider spec'ing it.

I've seen it spec'd on an R for a customer of the dealer I ordered with; the final price was truly eye-watering!

It is an Akrapovic to be fair. Yum.

But I would be more inclined to spend half the price on another system to get a nice sound and put the rest of the saved money towards other things. :D

Saw a very nice R in indium gray, 3 door with black Pretoria wheels.
    Anyone here?

Anyone know if that Akrapovic exhaust for the R is a full system or cat back only? Does it involve a different ecu map?

    It does sound rather fruity..

It's not even a cat back, rear silencer only. No ecu map.
The main restriction on an R is the downpipe, even a cat back wouldn't need an ecu update.

I got a provisional build week from my dealer of wk40 for my GTi-PP order. Seemingly there are delays on lights at the moment.

You'll be looking at 181 at that rate...

Provisional build week means nothing though. It can push out/pull in before it's a confirmed bw.

I'm still hoping for a late Oct delivery. The dealer, who has been absolutely brilliant with updates and information since first talking to him, said that the BW hadn't moved so far and he thought it was unlikely to pull in due to delays on lights (delays which were mentioned by a dealer on the UK GolfGTI website too).

I have a cut off date after which I told the dealer I'll just wait until Jan for delivery. The dealer was happy to do this but pointed out that they don't know if there would be price increases for 181.
Hopefully, it won't come to that!

And yet my dealer can't even get through to whoever they need to contact in VW regarding build dates and haven't gotten back to me regarding a 6 week delay on a standard Golf. I wonder if I ordered a GTI would they be able to get a hold of someone. I just find it hard to believe he's emailing someone in VW somewhere and they're not answering their phones either.

Get your comm number and contact VW yourself. Anytime I've done it they were back to me within 24 hours with an update.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Yeah you can do that but having been there before you're only torturing yourself. Weekly updates won't make it come any quicker :)

Can we talk about the GTE in this thread...?

Anyone got any thoughts about them, I drove one recently and was actually quite impressed. I want to replace my DSG Golf TSI with another higher spec Golf, I don't want diesel and I don't really want to go GTI at my age.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

I'm sure it's a fine car, but I would just be wary of depreciation as it's a relatively new concept in the Golf and could suffer more so because of it. Also, battery and ev tech is likely to improve a lot which will make the current tech, old tech before long further impacting residuals.

Too old for a GTI? Don't think that's possible

Yeah, been there done that in my youth. I had all sorts of crazy cars over the years and a GTI would be wasted on me now, I drive lots of hire cars when I travel on business so I can get my thrills that way, at home I just want comfort, reliability and economy. My son has a GTD and while it's fun to drive it wouldn't be for me. I could potter around town with ease on electrics or hybrid and know the petrol engine is there if I needed it.

I drove a Seat FR for a couple of weeks which had the 1.4 petrol engine (I assume it's the same one) and that was really nice and more than enough for me, I don't need two litres of engine.
