Was that a dealer speced GTi or a customer's? I'd hate to think a customer would order something like that.

Dealer spec afaik. It has a few pricey options on it though like pro nav dynaudio and dcc I think. I think I'd have picked another colour and probably wheels before any of those. But I'm sure someone will like it!

Blackwater in Cork have something similar in that colour. Really doesn't work at all.

At least it would show a customer what not to order in terms of colours and wheels. I still believe the GTi looks best in white, red or grey.

I thought the previous GTi alloys weren't great, but these MKs look far worse IMO.
The GTi wheel choices unless you go to 19" is very poor and of course nearly everything is diamond cut.

I've seen that one; totally agree. Plus it had lovely swirl marks on it in the showroom.

Odd question but I don't suppose anyone has access to the VW order system?! Placed an order on a 1.4 TSI Highline (couldn't stretch to a GTI unfortunately!) and would like to double check exactly what was ordered with extras etc...

Anyone got any opinions on the Golf GTE hybrid I've seen advertised?

I reckon I could live with one of these, I don't know how the whole electric car charging system works. I've seen the charging stations here and there but I dont think I could be bothered driving around looking for one or sitting around waiting for it to charge but I don't think it would be any great hardship to charge it up at home overnight, drive off wherever I'm going and then return on the petrol engine.

Test drove one a few months ago. I was impressed tbh, good turn of speed and decent on battery only. The main downside I found was you could feel the extra weight of the batteries but 90% of the time it's not an issue.

The car could be perfect in every way but may take some time for a car like that to be 'normal' in the Irish market and for that reason I would imagine early adopters will lose a lot on depreciation.

It does seem to offer a lot though.

I drove the "e-Golf" recently - not on purpose - my workplace was doing an "e-car" event one day and they had a few electric cars for us to look at. Very surreal strange experience driving that car - no noise at all barring a bit of tyre noise once you get going! It felt pokier than I expected it to. Range is the killer for it though as with all those cars which makes it a hard sell to anyone other than city commuters. I think they said it was < 300 kms range (and I bet thats on the optimistic side). 45 minutes to charge it from 0-full at a proper charge point - or 17 hours from your domestic socket :D Then there's the price tag. 36k after the government kick back. It's spec was entry-mid spec level at best, so a TSI / TDI equivalent would be at least 7-8k cheaper...

As for the GTE, I haven't driven that but it seems like a better option than the e-Golf at the moment and it's not much more expensive? You won't have the same range anxiety with it anyway. Better finished car too, it has more or less the same standard of spec and finish as a GTD.

I drove the Passat GTE in Berlin earlier this year. Spec in that car was huge as it was a VW demonstrator car. But more importantly, the power when in 'GTE' mode is very impressive.

Petrol engine in the Passat is only a 1.4 (I assume TSI 150bhp) which is a bit underpowered for the size and weight of the car.

In electric mode, the car is eerily quiet.

I see in the uk there is a GTD Blueline comes on 17's but lower and is 400 £ cheaper. reduction in co2's as well

Akrapovic exhaust available on the R for £2975

As far as I know the paperwork you signed when ordering should have the price breakdown on it, the extras might be there?

I ordered my Highline the start of June, got a call with a date of the end of September then got a call back minutes later saying that's a lot later than expected, it would be 16 weeks at that stage. Not getting leather seats or anything that would delay it. Highline, 1.0 DSG with keyless entry and park assist. Was hoping to have it end of August, was expecting to hear back at the start of the week so need to call them again :(

Specced up a performance pack GTi DSG with a few options and its up to 43k. I won't be buying a brand new one anyway! I'd be tempted by a 2-3 year old example in a few years. At the rate the R's sold at they might actually be a better buy when they are a few years old.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Is an R still next on the list? 2015 was the year that sales picked up for the R as it was silly money in 2014, so a fair few 3 year old examples should be up for sale in the coming 12 months.

Are there any differences between the standard GTI and the PP, other than the obvious difference in power? Product and Price guide on website outdated.

Red larger calipers and limited slip diff on the front IIRC. Red writing inside the GTI emblems too

The price differential on the configurator for the DSG PP seems crazy high.
When I ordered mine, there was no pricing available for VW Ireland for the PP DSG, but the model was available to order.
In the end, the dealer agreed to give it to me for the price of a manual PP + 1800 euro, with a refund if the price set by VW Ireland came in lower, and with the dealer taking the hit if it was higher.

From the configurator: 5 door models - cost in addition to GTI Manual
    GTI Manual: €0
    GTI DSG: €1800
    GTI PP: €1800
    GTI PP DSG: 44565

Another way of looking at the above is that they are charging €1800 to add DSG to a regular GTI, but €2765 to add it to a GTI PP.
That's a lot of money for one more gear!

I spot at least one other strange occurence on the configurator page.
The GTI PP DSG is the most efficient of the GTIs by dint of its new gearbox, so the CO2 is slightly lower (144 g/km)
I note they list the tax on the GTI PP DSG as €280, but this corresponds with band B2 (CO2 emissions of 131-140 g/km).
If they have managed to convince Revenue to tax it in Band B2 instead of Band C, there would be a massive reduction in VRT from 23% to 19%, which should chop well over a grand off the price.
Not sure what's going on here at all - perhaps just the usual inaccuracy.

Has anyone seen a new pdf price list?

If you're going DSG, it gets a 7 speed gearbox, vs. 6 speed in the non-performance. Doesn't apply to the manual though

I see the terrible pump coloured Mk7.5 GTi in Galway is listed on carzone. 49k

Lots of extras like PP, DSG, Nav Pro and Dynaudio but they didn't shell out for the
paint. Black Rubin is truly hideous. Good luck to them trying to sell it for that price. Must be one of the first PP Mk 7.5s in the country.

I took part in a leisurely ;) Sunday drive today with a great bunch of fellow petrol heads. What an absolutely awesome day out. The R is truely built for the back roads, happily keeping pace with an M5 on the twisties and the straights. Its undisputed :D

€2765 extra for the DSG PP over the manual - that's astronomically outrageous!! It does however seems to be on par with the price in other European regions.
It doesn't bode well for the DSG price of other models if/when the DSG 6 boxes are replaced.

The latest pdf pricelist I'd seen was 23/May but it had no price in it for the DSG PP.

Personally, and I'll probably be slated for this, I don't see the attraction of the DSG for the GTi/R. To me the GTi is supposed to be about the driving experience and the driver involvement in that experience so for me it's keep it pure and choose manual.

The DSG box on the backroads jaunt today was just fantastic.... I didn't even play with the paddles that much. Stuck it in Race mode and let it do its thing.
I'd find it very hard to go to a manual again.

Where were those photos taken Joe, btw that Tiguan passenger door was opening very close to your car.

I know yeah, I was watching her! That was just a couple of km outside Ballina in Tipperary. Fantastic views today over the lakes.

Not yet ;) There's serious gains to be had... so I've heard...

I personally wouldn't be rushing to do it though, the car is just so capable as standard. For most of the year I just use it for boring commutes and sometimes I question myself if its worth having at all... today reminded me why I should keep it another while ;)
