    Is there a massive difference?

Working in a role at the moment which would be equivalent to EO, looking at applying for HEO.

    Any advice?

My experience is that the jobs aren't necessarily hugely different in smaller teams but the expectation in terms of experience and qualifications is much higher. I applied for promotion in a public sector body and missed out by a point or two in the interview. But I applied elsewhere and landed an HEO equivalent role - so far my new role seems very similar to my old one so I was either working above my grade in the old job or the standard is lower her. I am not really sure to be fair.

This is one of the dangers of the Civil Service - HEO roles can vary widely (as can lots of grades). Some HEO jobs are effectively 90% the same as EO with the odd bit of complexity to justify the higher grade. Other heo jobs could involve a lot of staff management, dealing with bullying complaints, dealing with underperformance, conducting annual reviews, holding staff meetings etc. Along with personal responsibility for delivering to a deadline for a team, not just yourself. I've done EO roles that have been tougher than HEO jobs I was in. It depends on staffing, department culture, experience of your EOs and support from AP.

If you walk into a section with pleasant experienced staff the job can be very easy. The same section with poor/inexperienced or bitchy staff and you could have a nightmare job.
