to be fair wexford and dublin at 21s level have been the top dogs for the last few years , kilkenny have a few minor teams coming through and what looks like a deacent 21s team this year

brought very little through in the last few years and lost some exceptional players in the process it was bound to happen at some stage ,no fear they will be back

I expected the Kilkenny demise to come after 2014, not sure how they made back to back finals winning one. What I didn't expect was how the basic skills of the game from them became so bad. When you compare their speed of thought, fitness, touch, mobility and striking to that of cork Tipp Galway Clare etc, it's actually terrible for such a proud county. I expect lean times ahead for them, and I don't think Cody is the right man to rejuvenate kk hurling either. Some of his calls in the last year have been strange to say the least.

A Galway Tipp final if they stay apart in the draw

Things have moved on since Codys heady days- not least of all the other teams have improved immensely and kilkenny have regressed. Don't think there'll be any pressure on him to go per se, but there will be pressure to improve things...a lot. If that doesn't happen discontent will grow.

Only problem for Kilkenny, is they haven't won a u21 leinster title in 5 years.

Except for the one they won on Wed night.

Hard to disagree with any of the above. The hurlers just aren't there at present.

Codys tenure has been similar to Alex Ferguson.

    A longevity of unparalleled success.

The difference now is that Alex retired at the exact time it was going to unravel.

You could see this coming a few years ago so it's not as if he couldn't have known.

Exactly, Cody has done a fantastic job for KK hurling over the years. He must be an utterly dedicated to it, his life. But he hasn't seen the wood for the trees and has hung on too long. What do they say about political careers and their ending?

I can't get over how bad kk were this year. How they made an AI final less than a year ago? Amazing

Says more about the other teams than it does about Kilkenny.
Ask an even better question, how did they come from 7 down last night and also get a shot on goal to win it (which went wide)
A question I would ask is why the media's lovechild Gleeson went completely missing when the real heat came on.

He was the top scorer from play in Normal time, and was out on his feet but still back putting in the hits. Disappeared...

People love to cut the back of the best players, but he was magnificent last night.

Love child is a bit harsh. They pointed out a few times how he went so out quiet in extra time so they did criticise him in fairness.

Lovechild? Easy knowing you're from a small county with a comment like that. A 21 year old hurler of the year is likely to get some media attention. Also, it's easy knowing you weren't at the game last night because those who were there will appreciate how much work Austin Gleeson put in - he was outstanding.

Without doubt he is a brilliant player, nobody can argue that. But needs to stand up when it matters most.
As a neutral looking in, a lot of the time he puts himself ahead of the team.
At this stage All-Stars are useless to Waterford, All-Irelands are what its about.

Was he not replaced by Dan Shanahan in extra time?

If Gleeson was given that last free instead of shanahan I don't even think there would have been extra time and there would be no place to criticise him as he was immense in the 70 mins

Westmeath gave them their hardest game
and beat the KK U21s last year
are Westmeath that good? or the standard of U21 teams has regressed a bit?

Cork and Galway final with Cork winning outright.

The only team I think will definitely be in the final is Tipp. They have the best starting 15 and best squad and are hitting form at the right time. There is nothing between the rest of the teams bar Wexford so you just couldn't pick. I'd probably be surprised to see Clare there I suppose.

Cork aren't being given enough credit for beating two title contenders already. I can't get my head around why Galway are being put on a pedestal over Cork. Galway haven't played a big team yet and were actually rubbish in the league the final aside.

No, they couldn't get Dan's baseball cap off, so they put on Maurice instead..:D:D

I was Informed on the Waterford board that possibly the QFs will be broken up into 2 different days if Cork are involved. So prob Sat 22nd and Sunday 23rd July

That's bollox and should always be a double header, tough **** if you can't get tickets. I have u2 on the Saturday in Croke Park and don't want Waterford to be playing there QF that day and end up missing it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,148 ✭✭✭mountgomery burns

I think if the demand is there they should not be double headers, and the demand could well be there this year.

Great to see the amount of interest reflected in attendances this year.

Just have too wait and see and pray I'll be able too go. Don't want too miss u2 for a hurling match but don't want too miss the Waterford match either tough choice

I imagine because Galway have been there or thereabouts for a few years now. Many of them have already played in 2 All-Ireland finals when they were younger. They look a mature side now. Not that it guarantees success.

Cork have won two games after a few bad years. Well they might make it three today but I imagine the bookies feel Galway are a much more known commodity.

Disagree, absolutely no definites that Tipp will be back in the final. They absolutely have the ability to do it but have not played with the same form they showed last year. Lot of hurling to do yet.

True no one is giving Cork enough credit for winning 2 games no one thought they would, but Galway have been there for a few years now and have more experience and have shown the best form so far this year. Again though, lots of hurling to go. I find Cork and Galway play very similar styles.

That Cork team is full of running, hunger and ability.I can see them going all the way,the intensity they have is superb.

Cody will be very lucky to avoid a suspension for touching the linesman if the GAA are consistent with their disciplinary procedures.

I reckon it'll be Galway/Cork or Clare in the final.
Waterford/Wexford and Tipp are not good enough to reach the final this year.

Not going to U2 is the correct answer to any quandary.

Big u2 fan and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity but this discussion is for the u2 forum

Just my luck that they will fix Waterfords qf for the same day
