Donegal win by one, very exciting finish, shame it wasn't on telly.

Sounds like they ground out a tough win

Donegal win by one. Hopefully might push them on.

Well that was a hell of a lot more entertaining than I expected. Donegals senior players with some huge scores in the second half, the fragile defence remains

Pity that game wasn't televised, listening on the radio it was tense stuff

    Luck ?
    Bribery ?
An anti curse to the final curse ?

Ref did his damndest to make a game of it

That last free alone to Meath attempting to take it to extra time was disgraceful.

    Who was the ref?

I wouldn't say they didn't deserve the victory. However do they deserve to be getting as far as they do get? No they don't. People think Mayo are still contenders for an all Ireland but they aren't near as good as what they used to be and I can't see them making a come-back any time soon.

What isn't deserved. If we win we were lucky/the other team were bad/ran out of steam. It's lazy analysis.
On today you could see derry were much better than clare in championship football.
Clare were being talked up as a huge threat. All out took was mayo to play a solid 10 mins and it was game over.

What is not deserved? 1 point difference against Dublin (the joint finest team I've ever seen) after a replay in the all Ireland last year.

Didn't give Donegal a thing all day, if a Meath man was wise enough to just fall over in the last play, they would have been given their equalising score. Will be very interested to see that squareball again too

Caolan Ward almost had his head separated from his shoulders and Meath got a free in first half and point it.

In general that's the order of the day when a division 1 team is playing an underdog.

Didn`t happen in the Mayo V Clare game, nor should it in any game.

I didn't see the Donegal game I couldn't see the stream on the face book app. I hate Facebook.

I ended up looking at in interview with Murphy after the game against Down had to get herself to translate!

I thought the ref in the Clare was poor. It went to bits.

Didn't give Donegal a black card or pull them up for overcarrying. Aside from the square ball, which is still a mystery to me, I don't think Donegal can have many complaints about the ref.

The square ball was a mystery to everyone bar the ref.

That last free to Meath in an attempt to take it to extra time was ridiculous and I would imagine young Ward being nearly decapitated and see the free going to Meath for a tap over might have a complaint.

Great run for Carlow though all the same. Fair play to them.

Bye bye Kilkenny now I reckon.

You would need to drive a stake in their hearts to be sure:)

I didn't see anyone getting decapitated and have nothing to add on that til I see the incident on TSG. For the last Meath free, I'd need to see that again too. There were a lot of players about and I, like near everyone, have only seen it once.

Why would the ref want it to go to ET - out of some sense of fairness?

There was a very vocal Donegal supporter behind me roaring for the whole match, not so much at the ref though.

Well first of all my original comment was not worded well. I said "do they deserve to be getting as far as they do get?". What I meant by that was "do they deserve to get as far this year as they deserved to get every other year".The answer is No in my opinion. I did say in my original Comment that they are not as good as they used to be.

So to answer your question they deserved to get there every other year. They even should have won in the final last year. Nothing to do with luck, bribery or a curse. However this year they are not as good as they used to be. Ok yes they bet Sligo, Derry and Clare so far in the championship but it was their fitness that won those games for them and not their skills. When you go back to the first 50-60 minutes of these games they were no better than the opposition, which is disappointing for a division 1 team that should have won an all Ireland last year. The League was not much better for Mayo this year either

Whether they play Cork or Roscommon next, it will be a tougher game than any game they won so far and it will be interesting to see what happens. Im not 100% sure but I think the winner of that game is to play Kerry. Whether that is Mayo, Roscommon or Cork they won't beat Kerry since none of them are playing to their full potential at the moment. And just to go back to the "curse" Mayo people like to bring up whenever they lose a game, I hope you aren't one of those people who's favourite slogan is "Mayo for Sam" all year until they lose and suddenly remember that Mayo has a "curse" and only for that, Mayo would win every all Ireland :)

Fixtures I mentioned might not be exact so correct me if I'm wrong.

Result of the day for me though is Tipp beating Cavan. I think they are improving greatly and could become a threat in Munster in the near future.

Ref made some bizarre decisions for both teams. Yes disallowed goal I don't know . Both Murphy was blatantly pushing Menton in the back for kickouts and two crucial scores came from these pushs in the back. Some questionable calls against Meath also.
Overall Meath showed they could go toe to toe with a Division 1 team and this augurs well for the future for one of the youngest teams in the country. Their is talent there. Brian Conlon in his debut game was brillant. Now the first year is out of the way. We can get down to business next year and the year after. It took O Neill and Walsh three years before Kildare and Galway made progress. Both Kildare and Galway were poor overall in their first and second season under their above managements.

Get into Division 1. Which is not impossible. Since we have finished third 3 of the last 4 seasons in Division 2. Losing out to promotion on point difference scoring difference and head to head. And more importantly stay in Division 1. We have not been in Division 1 since 2001, 16 years ago. And it's the late 90s since Meath were in Division 1 year after year. That's the key for this Meath team. They showed tonight they could play in Division 1.

I think in the seasons 2019 2020 2021 this Meath team will a make a big impact in the championship ship. When these group of 22 and 23 year olds reach their peak age of 25 26 27. We are out. But this is just the beginning not the end for this Meath team. Once we keep Andy McEntee in charge. I will write a more detailed analysis later.
