I honestly don't think Muireann acting as cover is a bad thing. Up until the start of the summer of 2015 she was presenting the evening show on 98FM (now The Fix) from 7-9. Ray Foley fought to add her to the breakfast show and she joined that team for the next 6 months until the show ended.

After that she started covering random shows on 98FM when the main presenters were off aswell as presenting weekend shows on the station...then added in covering for Paula McSweeney on Today FM when she was off (or covering for D&D or D'Arcy). She joined Foley on the Six O'Clock Friday shows on and off covering for other presenters and made the gig her own. She has now worked her way up to be the voice of the station in many ways, all the idents etc. She has a regular gig on Saturdays on Today FM and 98FM and has overtaken Paula as the number one cover presenter on mid-morning, midday and afternoons. To me thats how radio should work...people who are talented working their way up. Personally, I think she definitely deserves a weekday full-time slot but she'll get there (hopefully at the expense of Al Porter).

When one of the current daytime team leaves I just know Dara Quilty will get a daytime show on Today FM. He's already done popular slots on SPIN and 98 and there's really only one more promotion for him in Communicorp which is Today FM. Furthermore he is nearly three years doing the 98FM drivetime slot and shows no sign of losing popularity. I think he, not Al Porter, should have gotten the lunchtime show when D&D were promoted. Al should have got the drivetime show on 2FM.

Don't disagree with anything said there. Really like Quilty myself and was hoping himself and maybe Brian Maher would get lunchtimes. I think with Apella and touring he has his hands full at the moment so 98FM is probably the perfect gig for him...that said he does love radio and I would imagine Today FM or 2FM would be a goal of his. As for Al Porter, no. Eoghan McDermott is far far better on radio than Porter.

I wonder how Eoghan and Al as a double act would have worked? :-)

Have to say that as far as I'm concerned Muireann is now the main reason to listen to Today FM. She sounds great and her interview style is much better that D&D in the same time slot. Anytime they interview someone about a serious subject its cringe worthy especially when Dermot makes a joke about i,,, he's like a little kid looking for attention.
Muireann seems to be very well versed on any subject she talks about and dare I say it she seems to be a female version of Anton but with a better musical taste.

Now there is a compliment and deserved.
I have started to turn on TodayFM on a Saturday afternoon for her show. She just can talk the talk & keep you entertained, defo my fave DJ on TodayFM at the moment.

So, are we all agreed? Muireann: 9am-7pm.

    yes !

great news, she is on instead of Al Porter next week !!

I hope she's getting paid by the show.

She must be coining it in at the moment.
    And good for her too!

10 hours of Muireann?? No thanks, ten hours is too long for any presenter. I would have kept the current daytime schedule as it it, except with Dara Quilty in Al Porter's slot. But Muireann would be a welcome addition to the daytime lineup; I'd give Dara Al's slot and maybe give Muireann Fergal Darcy's slot.

Great comparison. Totally agree. You can tell they both present their shows with smiles on their faces and this makes all the difference as a listener. Nothing worse than knowing a presenter would rather be at home and is just going through the motions.

You need to recalibrate your sense of humour. :D

Surely it would be easier just given each DJ a day rather than an hourly time slot.

    Muireann on Mondays
    D&D on Tuesdays
    D'arcy on Wed......

Muireann O'Connell got a lot of experience at chatting and playing interesting music when she used to host the afternoon show on Phantom FM - this was a show with chat and music! Ironically, she was a stand-in then as well, standing in for Alison Curtis while she was on maternity leave!

Al Porter is the only presenter that has put me off listening. I missed Muireann this week, as we switched over to 2fm in the office (not bad so far), but I might, if I can, switch back to Today FM next week. For the week that Porter's off at least. And, I was wrong in what I said about him not taking any more time off, as his holidays have all been used. I can't remember which poster it was, though, that said that it was a bet that Porter would be off again soon. And. . .he apparently is!

Fergal is very irritating but he played a clip from an old show the other day and I was like, wow! His voice was even worse. I remember him on I radio and his voice would be gone every second day- prob from talking sh!te all day long. It doesn't seem to be as husky or as forced sounding now.

He does seem to be doing something right. I think his last JNLR's were up.
I might be wrong on this though.

    Not for me, anyways.

Don't confuse "majority of people" with "majority of posters on an internet forum".

Louise's show tanked - he's up from that but not when Fenton was on- I could be wrong about the Fenton part but Louise's show plummeted

Just listened painfully unfunny forced banter

Add the likes of Facebook to the mix. I doubt a lot of those commenting are Boardsies. Though, it seems to be the women that favour Al. It's mainly the men that seem to have negative opinions of him and his show!

2fm has been changed already in the office. Maybe whatever colleague was first in heard a snippet of Breakfast Republic (assuming the gang are back), didn't like it, and switched off. I've never heard it, apart from last week, so I can't comment. Spin was on briefly, and a bit to my bemusement, I came back from lunch to find Q102 had been turned on. Apart from one or two current songs heard on any other station, the playlist was the same as it has been for yonks.

It's hard to know how the JNLRs will gauge his show, seeing as he's away so much. It seems to be an Al/Muireann two-hander (oo-er) at this stage.

Does anyone remember the rumour that Dermot Whelan was going to join Bernard O'Shea to replace Hector on 2FM breakfast?
