    What happens in this situation:

A mature student qualifies as Independent and gets awarded everything from SUSI going into year one, including 100% of the maintenance grant.

However to start full time education they have to leave their job or go off social welfare (they don't qualify for btea). So now they have no form of income at all. They are single, childless and supported themselves without their parents help since they moved away from home years ago. They live or the institution they are attending is no where near their parents so moving in with them isn't an option.

However the parents understand and want to support their adult child in anyway they can to during this time. So their parents give them money so they can eat and pay rent as the Maintenance grant as we all know is unlivable on.

Does mean in year two the have to apply are a mature dependent?

I ask because they won't be able to prove how they funding themselves independently. As they won't have payslips, social welfare receipts and I'm sure SUSI knows people can't live off nothing. If their parents don't qualify does that mean the student looses everything from SUSI?

If you can provide SUSI with utilities bills in your name for the appropriate time periods you will be classed as independent. It doesn't matter if your parents are paying the bill so long as they are in your name.
