I find his impressions have gone down very badly in the last few years as well. While sometimes he can nail a new impression, some of them are very poor. This Morgan Freeman one that he does for the GAA is neither remotely close nor remotely funny.

By way of comparisons, Dermot Whelan's impressions are brilliant I think! That has to come down to the irregularity that they're done. The only regular one now is Tony Cascarino.

Dermot Bannon pops up weekly too

Do you mean the interview they did with Dermot Bannon is repeated weekly?

I thought they only repeated it twice:confused:;)

Is Al Porter today fm's attempt for a Gerry Ryan type show?
It struck me on the way home from work that it would probably the exact same target audience...

It's a year ago this weekend that Friday night 80s, Nothin but 90s, Declan Meehan & Jim O Neill were axed.

I think they should have put Porter on at 9am and left D&D on lunchtime

What I would have done was put D&D on 9am, Dara Quilty on 12pm lunch and made Al Porter a cover presenter like Simon Delaney/Aidan Power were on 2FM. Dara is doing a great job on 98FM I must say.

The difference being that Gerry Ryan was a competent presenter.

.... and yet you move to Breakfast Republic???

Probably the least entertaining, infantile show on radio.

They're sketches are very good, and its always a different show. Infantile, maybe thats the humour I like, I do like D&D and its like a breakfast show version.

The three presenters bounce off each other quite well.

They always seem to me to be over rehearsed or too scripted - it never comes across as natural banter so I gave up on them and switched to pj Gallagher - great show.

Once was enough. I heard him covering for someone else (can't remember who) and I wanted to throw something at the radio. Instead I settled for the off button. He was appalling.

    It was most likely RT.

It was - one of the worst presenters I've ever heard.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,168 ✭✭✭Ursus Horribilis

It definitely wasn't RT because I never listen to him. It was either on Newstalk or Today FM. Either way, the point still stands. He might have other talents but radio presenting isn't one of those.

I think he may have stood in for Anton Savage one of the days

Every time I turn on Today Fm lately Muireann is filling in for someone's show. She must just hang around the lobby waiting to be told she's needed. Must be pretty crappy to have the talent and likability to be a radio presenter and do a lot of the station's voice overs- but not respected enough to be given a permanent slot and only called upon for odd jobs, and being seen as the resident filler- inner.

It's tough alright but there are only so many slots to go around. Unless Al Porter leaves, I can't see her getting a permanent slot.

I think the cover should be more varied. Dara Quilty, Brian Maher, Steven Cooper would all be good choices to cover vacancies on Today FM. I also think Neil Delamere should be the main cover for the Ian Dempsey show, and Joe Donnelly should be used more frequently.

I presume though that people who cover are only paid for the times when they're on air?

They all have their own shows on 98 to worry about. Take one of them out then 98 suffers which would make no sense from a business POV.

So does Muireann. And Neil and Joe aren't on 98.

I didn't mention Neil or Joe for that reason, hence me taking them out of your quote.

Muireann does a Saturday show on 98. Brian, Dara and Cooper are all on the full-time schedule so I don't know how you can compare the two.

I enjoyed her stint on that slot but I don't like her on the D&D slot.

Tbh, Al Porter has me turned off the station as a whole. Other than Louise Duffy and Songs of Praise on Sunday night, I really don't tune in much now. That's a big change in 6 months:(

Tbh, I could probably listen to Muireann all day, no problem. I would love to see her take over from Porter or F Darcy. Next step, give Matt the heave ho and get Gav Reilly in that slot to freshen it up. Get Dara Quilty in to do the other afternoon slot.

While they're at it, they can bring back TXFM. :pac:

Sounds like shes so excited about everything, but she's better than a lot out there.

Anyone hear Fergal having a rant about twitter users and keyboard warriors having a go, he even mentioned "boards" having a go at him then he started saying sh!t and sh!te a lot so i turned him off, which is what a lot of people should do if reading stuff offends them and I'm not having a go at anyone with that,

15 years ago it was exactly the same, except then Tim Kelly was the person filling in on every shift going

Maybe there is only a limited pool of stand-in presenters out there?

I honestly don't think Muireann acting as cover is a bad thing. Up until the start of the summer of 2015 she was presenting the evening show on 98FM (now The Fix) from 7-9. Ray Foley fought to add her to the breakfast show and she joined that team for the next 6 months until the show ended.

After that she started covering random shows on 98FM when the main presenters were off aswell as presenting weekend shows on the station...then added in covering for Paula McSweeney on Today FM when she was off (or covering for D&D or D'Arcy). She joined Foley on the Six O'Clock Friday shows on and off covering for other presenters and made the gig her own. She has now worked her way up to be the voice of the station in many ways, all the idents etc. She has a regular gig on Saturdays on Today FM and 98FM and has overtaken Paula as the number one cover presenter on mid-morning, midday and afternoons. To me thats how radio should work...people who are talented working their way up. Personally, I think she definitely deserves a weekday full-time slot but she'll get there (hopefully at the expense of Al Porter).
