09 Focus cutting out

    09 Focus has a problem with it where sometimes when taking off it will just die.

    Scanned for fault codes and got the following:

    P1412 - EGR Valve frozen - intermittant

    P2458 - DPF Regeneration Duration - intermittant

    P0490 - EGR Control Circuit - Circuit High - intermittant

    P042F - EGR Valve stuck closed - intermittant

    Would I be right in saying the EGR needs replacing, or what would be the best thing to do first?

    More than likely it's the egr.

    I assume it's the 1.6 diesel.

    It is yeah.

    Would changing the whole valve be the best thing to do so?

    More than likely. It's be a common enough problem.

    Any motor factors should stock them.

    Yes most likely egr valve needs replacing. I would recommend a genuine one as oppose to the cheaper spurious types can be problematic lost repair. Also best to decarbonise the egr cooler and the inlet tube at same time. Adaptation settings of new egr valve need to be set by scantool also

    Cheapest solution is to blank it off.

    The egr allows some exhaust to be fed back into the intake during idle to reduce emissions and will close under engine load. If the egr is sticky, it will allow lots of exhaust back into the engine and may cause it to cut out with oxygen starvation. Blanking it off will simply block the pipe.

    Also, the fuel filter will cause similar problems as it's so fine, any partial blockage will cause fuel starvation under load and it will cut out.

    I didn't know that thanks. I've had customers provide their own valves that they purchase on eBay from China and I won't warranty the job as they have a tendency to fail and throw up fault codes. It's probably common sense that a valve that costs €90 isn't going to be made to the same spec as one that retails for €280.
