Reddit or Boards?

I like both places for different reasons and both have their pros and cons. Reddit's system of letting the most upvoted (liked) posts rise to the top saves so much time and makes the old Boards way look ancient by comparison.

Yet, for an Irish view of things, I think Boards is still useful for certain things. Although it does feel like the forum needs to modernise things for the new way things are now discussed online.

My problem with Reddit is I go there and read a thread. But if I go back later and want to see what else has been added to the thread it's a pain following it

In that both can make you fat when used in excess?

The upvote thing on Rediit is the exact reason I've never taken to it. I find it disruptive, I like to read the conversation in its natural flow. Plus, I don't even trust people to vote for Eurovision acts.

Reddit for a quick fix/the latest news.

Boards for in-depth, constructive and logical discussions on important topics and current events.

But it's much more aimed at today's busy lifestyles. Who really has time to wade through 40 pages of posts anymore when all you have time for is the good stuff?

I spent far more time on Reddit.

    "But Reddit is ugly!"

It's 2017. I browse Reddit in a beautiful app and I browse boards in desktop mode on my mobile with the same theme I've used for literally a decade.

I get abused here in general but not on Reddit.

Reddit isn't a real reflection of a natural conversation because of the upvote system. In face to face conversation you hear it all, even the irrelevant stuff that annoys you. Same here, it's not just what people are voting for, it's what they're actually saying.

I don't understand how Reddit works. It's not linear. It's just all over the place and I can't follow it.

Old style linear conversation is very 5-10 years ago.

It's all based on what other people have upvoted. As I said, I don't even trust the general public to vote for the Eurovision. I read and I form my own opinion.

You experience what Reddit is like everywhere, except on forum sites like boards.

Even your Facebook feed uses the Reddit model where you choose what threads to read. Same with newspapers.

Use both for different things. I like the more local vibe of this place but can't beat the range of topics on reddit!!

Basically the louder you shout and more populist you are for that particular topic the more you get noticed.

    Circle jerk basically.

You can view posts in a thread many ways on Reddit, not just "Best" and "Top". If you view by "Old" you will see posts in chronological order.

It's all very adjustable to what you want out of it.

Can't wrap my head around reddit at all, it confuses the shyte out of me so I don't use it. I must be getting old.

I browse Reddit a decent bit now because its a site that has nice apps and is very forgiving of low/slow data connections (hint hint!)

But what your saying isn't really true when it comes to the comments, Reddit upvotes the funniest, quickest or alternatively the most authoritative sounding answer.

It doesn't matter if the answer may have glaring issues if you examine it properly it will get upvoted if it sounds right.
Saw a good example of this yesterday when somebody was talking about having already sunk 500 solo man hours into taking dry walling out of a house, that sounds right until you realize thats the equivalent of a five man team taking more than 12 working days (only done that sort of stuff casually but that seems far far to high considering how fast I've seen 2 guys strip places) maybe a builder here will correct me).

    Watch this..

I'm actually talking to you. Like me right now on my couch, talking directly to you. And you can reply.. And we can have a conversation about this topic for days and weeks and months.

Oh wait, no. Of course not. No one gives a toss about your post and no one will reply to you once this thread gets onto the next page. Your post is manure that feeds an ever growing thread of people not getting replied to.

    Reddit = dopey, unfocused raving

Boards = logical, coherent and reasoned

People ignore or down vote what they don't like. Why should they decide what I may or may not like?

If only you realised it was the exact opposite. I wake up every morning to conversations started days and weeks ago about stuff I'm interested in.

It just isn't like that. If you're into BMWs, toasters, or woodworking, you join the various subs. Each of the submissions get upvoted, as do the posts inside that. You're not getting people downvoting your model of calculator, you're getting people downvoting low quality submissions.

About 50% Americans. And it still looks the same.

The best thing to do is Google your interests along with Reddit in the search and join those subs. Anyone can create a sub so the best ones aren't obvious.

I hate boards for the fact that my posts are ignored 19 times out of 20 but on Reddit, I'm always talking to people.

Sorry, your was downvoted to oblivion, it'll never be seen as it's contrary to what the cool kids think.
