Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm generally all for competition but having multiple bin companies running the same routes seems inherently wasteful. The councils should tender out the services for a particular area, with minimum standards and fixed fees for the period of the contract (and companies awarded the contracts should be registered and paying tax in the EU)

It is stupidly wasteful. In my estate there are 3 bin companies collecting, all on different days, and each collecting waste, recycling and organic, and at least one collecting glass. This means at least 3 times a week smelly, noisy and dangerous bin lorries around the place, not to mention bloody unsightly wheelie bins all over the place. It's beyond a joke now that we're going to be charged by weight, going by the figures released last year my bill will double, that's before I pay for my neighbours waste

These are the words I got from naughten himself.

Any idea what the procedure is for addressing errors? Would there be any independent body to appeal to? I had a bin measured at 952kg last year. Who will regulate situations like this and ensure fair treatment for the customer?

Could I be charged a fortune and then have to fight for compensation? I'm concerned about situations like this and Greyhound have just fobbed me off because it happened to be a green bin so I wasn't affected by overcharging - they wouldn't countenance the fact it could just as easily happen for a black or brown bin.

The government is stating that it has no remit/ authority to control bin charges. So the companies can charge what they like and the 'market' will sort it out.

The refuse collection service is a service provided by the private sector to the public at large The accommodation provision service is provided by the private sector also for the public at large. So, how come that the Government has no problem in bringing in legislation to control the cost of rent but cannot do the same for bin clollection charges.
AND can the Gov also not control car insurance costs in the same way that it has got involved in rent control?

Got my renewal email from greyhound, dublin 13 area. I was paying 13 per month flat fee. Email says "your price plan for next 12 months is 16.50. looks like greyhound wont be phasing out monthly flat fee just yet.

New restrictions are brown bin not over 40kg and black bin allowance of 42kg PER MONTH, if over 42kg per month they will charge 30c per kg

The thing is if my bin is full and I have to put extra paid for bags out that's a fairly obvious and transparent charging structure. The problem with pay by weight is I have no way of accurately checking my bin when it goes out. So the system is immediately open to abuse whats to stop an unscrupulous operator leaning on the bin whilst it's been weighed.

What a well organised government we have. We're introducing this in July 2016. Ah no, we'll introduce it on July 1st 2017 after giving it time to hit news headlines 3 days beforehand to give yis all a few days to be ready/panic. But nah, we were only kidding. It won't come in til September 2017.
And then.... Sorry we meant September 2018, not this year. Yee should know us better than to take us seriously by now ffs. And even AFTER we bring it in next year it will all be grand coz we'll create a watchdog for yee to complain to after the bin companies fleece yee.
Won't do any good for your prices but it will give yee someone to ring and give Joe Duffy a break.
Til then, stay tuned, coz ya wouldn't know what we'd do next!

FF give up on their idea of a regulator to be established in the Dail tonight. Instead we will have a 'watchdog' to keep an eye out for price gouging. Can't see this ending well.....

....and they are all running around in circles for fear of what Murphy or Boyd Barrett will do next.
    A joke of a govt.

In the media this morning that Panda are issuing new contracts to their customers. Only have an Irish Times link at the moment.

It includes a raft of new charges and penalties but most worrying, Panda are seeking "The right to enter on to customers’ property to inspect bins".

I love the 30eur charge to clean a bin at the end of a contract. So potentially 90 EUR if you have three bins. They provide the service at the moment for 6.50eur a bin FFS. A near six fold increase.

Assume for those in contract with Panda this is an escape clause?

Except for those of us who live in an area that they have a monopoly.

No regulator either, what about an appeals process to contest fines or charges...what a mess.

Without going through the whole bin before it goes into the truck, how do they know if you have put something in the wrong bin??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,019 ✭✭✭ct5amr2ig1nfhp

Apparently camera's on the trucks that can spot items in the wrong bins.

I would be very surprised if their staff would agree to rummage through bins. It would be a health and safety nightmare for operators.

Apart from the fact that many areas have very little competition, the €30 per bin clean nearly acts as a dis-incentive to switch provided if other providers are only a little cheaper.
You will think twice about switching to other companies if they are close in price and you have to pay €90 to have bins cleaned.
The bin clean is a nonsense tbh - it should be either factored into their overall prices or give customer option of cleaning bins themselves.

As for the fines, what about in built up areas where anyone could open your bin on their way home from the pub and drop their curry chips into your recycling bin!
Or anyone put wrong rubbish into anyone else's bins.
Families that have kids - kids might put wrong item into wrong bin, etc...

All these issue and more are going to cause mayhem - and the consumer will be protected by who? The government, watchdog....no the regulator, oh wait there isnt going to be one!

I questioned that issue with Greyhound about the bins being out early in the morning and other than taking a day off work to sit and look at your bin until it's collected, how can you stop people dumping rubbish into you bin cuz sure as hell it would happen!!
    Their response was:
    https://greyhound.ie/product/gravity-bin-lock/

Disgraceful price for it but i suppose that is the answer to it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 706 ✭✭✭tiredblondie

    haha, yes, you'd need three!!

i googled it before and you can get the same one from the UK a bit cheaper (not too much cheaper but a bit)

This free allowance should be nearly enough for a two person household, so the monthly charge is all you would pay.

Oct 2018. Although some waste companies have allegedly jumped the gun with new contracts being issued.

Can you not swap easily between bins whenever a bin goes out

In fairness, **** as it sounds, we are all responsible for our own bins until the second it goes on the truck. No other way around it.
