Sonia deserves better than that. :( There are lots of graceful poses they could have had her in.

    The Spire is cool.

Appearance-wise, it doesn't do much for it. But as an engineering feat, I really like it. The way it was constructed in pieces, with each piece narrowing towards the top and how all the piece fit together perfectly. Reminds me of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. At any point of the arch, the cross-section is an equilateral triangle. The Gateway Arch looks cooler though.

The thing on the Kildare motorway
A load of random metal sticks and stuff.
    Apparently it's deliberate.

I see a new, "something" between the Athy and Kilcullen junctions on the M9 , not sure is it a piece of art or a religious thingy , light blue in color with what looks like white Lily's on it , about 4 m high, anyone know anything about it.

I really love that! There were a few of them on O Connell Street a few years back. The Hugh Lane must have bought one.

I was told that in the past when there was a new motorway built with EU funding, a sculpture was meant to go along with it and it had to be something that reflected local tradition/culture/folklore.
There is a very nice statue in the Curlew Mountains outside Sligo, I think there is one near Athlone that looks like four triangles pointing into the air that is meant to represent the Children of Lir.

I actually find those pieces of art along motorways to be kind of distracting.

This always makes me so so angry when I pass it. It makes no sense as you're driving, just looks like something was vandalised & is broken into bits.

Hey, artist, if something needs you to stand there and explain it to people for them to get it (and the explanation is pretty crap, tbh) then maybe DON'T PUT IT BESIDE A MOTORWAY where every single person passing will be relying on literal seconds to form an opinion. Your Sculpture FAILS. It just looks horrible and messy and ridiculous.

Like you don't have to do much to get a statue here really do you? Be on the radio in England? Is Graham Norton going to get a statue? I wonder if they'll give that aul one from Limerick who won the euro millions a statue? I wouldn't be surprised.

I really like the Fionn and his hounds statues just off the M7, as you enter the Curragh military camp. Dramatic, historic, appropriate and still artistic.

I think the Spire is one of the better modern sculptures

The one in Longford is pretty impressive. It's a massive violin just stuck in a hill.

It represents the sense of sorrow you have driving through the place.

When you actually see it you'll see it's not. That rusty colour seen above has weathered over the last few years to a deeper red. Almost certainly had to be by design.

Edit :can I also say how I love that a user called Connall Cearnach liked that statue, thought he'd have been more a Cú Chulainn man.

Can I nominate the cutsy wutsy little origami Rabbit that sits above the N2 in Meath. No idea its purpose.

For those arguing about money spent on this, I remember hearing it's all an EU initiative for art to liven up boring long motorways across the continent. It's all EU money, so not from Irish finances directly, just a case of might as well get some, than just ignore it.

And sure look at that little bunny nose!
