Ireland's crappiest public art.

I've noticed that just about every town and city has got these obligatory plaques or bronze sculptures of notables or something thrown together with a few rocks, usually at great expense. Limerick city being the latest getting a laughable 'likeness' of Terry Wogan.

Your nominations for crap public art, memorials and sculptures please!

There are some good ones too. The JFK statue in New Ross is excellent as it the Rory Gallagher statue in Ballyshannon. And also the Phil Lynott statue is a good one. But yes I agree every town and village seems to have some claim to fame that they cling to. Can't think of any obviously bad ones off the top of my head though.

The weird looking bronze work of Obama's head in Moneygall is pretty awful.

I quite like it. Certainly better than a statue of Terry Wogan that doesn't even look like Terry Wogan.

There was an outbreak of 1916 memorials last year, places with very tenuous links to the Rising formed a committee and put up some sort of plaque.

Crappy art is one thing, and is very subjective, so some people will like it and others won't.

But statues of people that obviously don't even look anything like them is quite another.

Its akin to a needle, very fitting when you consider all the junkies up that way!

The Sonia O'Sullivan and Anthony Foley ones are fairly shocking alright. Makes our sporting ones in Kerry seem decent enough, Mick O'Dwyer in Waterville and Crusher Casey in Sneem.

Joe Dolan in Mullingar. I grew up there but haven't been back since before it was built. Apparently it's tiny.

    Draiocht - blanchardstown center.

Walk by it and you'll see a new load of shyte every week.

5 paper cups thrown on the ground to represent social disharmony, a leaf with 'why' painted on it, single plum floating in a bowler hat filled with perfume.

    all that nonsense.

Sonia deserves better than that. :( There are lots of graceful poses they could have had her in.

    The Spire is cool.

Appearance-wise, it doesn't do much for it. But as an engineering feat, I really like it. The way it was constructed in pieces, with each piece narrowing towards the top and how all the piece fit together perfectly. Reminds me of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. At any point of the arch, the cross-section is an equilateral triangle. The Gateway Arch looks cooler though.

I really love that! There were a few of them on O Connell Street a few years back. The Hugh Lane must have bought one.

I was told that in the past when there was a new motorway built with EU funding, a sculpture was meant to go along with it and it had to be something that reflected local tradition/culture/folklore.
There is a very nice statue in the Curlew Mountains outside Sligo, I think there is one near Athlone that looks like four triangles pointing into the air that is meant to represent the Children of Lir.

This always makes me so so angry when I pass it. It makes no sense as you're driving, just looks like something was vandalised & is broken into bits.

Hey, artist, if something needs you to stand there and explain it to people for them to get it (and the explanation is pretty crap, tbh) then maybe DON'T PUT IT BESIDE A MOTORWAY where every single person passing will be relying on literal seconds to form an opinion. Your Sculpture FAILS. It just looks horrible and messy and ridiculous.
