Ronseal smooth finish filler vs plaster

Hi folks I'm a total diy noob (I mean can barely use a drill here). We have a couple of reasonably sized holes in a wall in our loft. 15" or so. I've put plasterboard in them screwed to batons (thanks YouTube), so now need to fill em.

The wall was originally plastered and painted, would I be alright with a few layers of that filler for the newly boarded up holes (and then paint), or is proper plaster essential for something like this?

You could put some plasterboard joint tape where the new plasterboard meets the old and then fill over with something like this: http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/polycell-ready-mix-plaster-repair-polyfilla---25l-709244, the tape will hold the filler. you can then sand/flatten it and use this if you're not entirely happy with the finish: http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/polyfilla-finishing-skim---25l-323201

I also find using filler in a silicone gun is much easier to manage. Don't forget to hit the release on the end of the gun when you're finished or want to smooth a bit. Or it will splooge everywhere and you've got a big mess on your hand. Don't mind all the hype of using silicone smoothing tools either. Use your finger with water. Also don't use silicone, that's for sealing. You want interior filler.
