If you're uncomfortable you're doing it wrong! ;)

Personally hammock camping is my favourite - no need to worry about hard ground, stones or sticks - just need a couple of well spaced trees. Best night's sleep I've ever had!

The discomfort aspect is more than just an uneven, hard ground to sleep on.

Going camping this weekend in fact.

Up to a mountain in Wicklow where a friend has his farm, big aul fire, baga cans and some great company. Job's oxo.

    No. Just no.
I've done more than my fair share of it, starting with family camping holidays in Yugoslawia (yes, I am that old) from when I was 9 to when I was 14,...

Dalmatia or were you more adventurous and went into the hinterland?

It's uncomfortable, somehow almost always way too warm,

    This.
Sometimes in France/Italy we end up with an exposed pitch.
Once the sun hits it in the morning at 7am you've got about 10 minutes to escape before it's a f**king oven.

I went camping with my little boy in the back garden last week and he loved it. We're going to try a few spots over the summer. I have camped all of my adult life and would much prefer it than a hotel.
I remember once camping in Clare in December:eek:
If you are prepared there should be no discomfort.

I've in the last few years caught the camping bug. Got new badas$ tent a few weeks ago that I'm raring to try out.
Got some new sleeping bags as well so going to sleep like a prince.

Planning a weekend in July and a week or 2 in August.

It's wonderful to disconnect for a while and live in the wild.

I've never been camping, I'd like to give it a try sometime, maybe go to electric picnic or so. The missus tells me I'm too much of a diva for it.

No, on the Croatian coast, not far from Pula. Beach holiday really, but with 3 kids it was the cheapest options my parents could find.

And tents have this way of trapping hot, stale air... We always would camp in the shade anyway, but I still don't remember ever finding it anything but too hot.

Electric Picnic is to camping is what the M50 at rush hour is to driving....

And camping is to a hotel is what a Tesco own brand pot noodle is to a good meal.

Was camping on the beach on Saturday night - few cans, few smokes, grand craic. The walk back to the boat the next day was less craic, but wouldn't put me off! Would go again today. Actually...

But surely various substances/music will distract me from the portaloo situation.

    Don't worry about the portaloo.
These are what you need if you're going camping properly.
    Day Time
    Night Time
    Poo Time

Place I go to in Cushendall is so peaceful.
Just sit looking out to sea with the town 5 minutes walk away.
Sitting with your wee radio trying to get a signal!

Me- No thanks, I'll just live my normal modern life thank you.

    Society- You're missing out.

A tent is a tent mate, I don't care what kind of carbon fibre mithril its made out of, when the sun's on it, it'll get hot.

The better the tent, there tends to more thought into design and ventilation

Been there and done that with the whole camping thing - cub scouts, the odd time for a night or two when on the boat on the Shannon, Feile (yes I'm old!), Electric Picnic. Tents are fun as a kid but there are the negatives - rarely a good night's sleep, tent gets very stuffy and humid very easily, lack of basic facilities unless at a really good serviced site, lack of security (I mean you can rob a tent with a knife) etc.

I would go camping again, but only as a short night away or 2. For a proper holiday, give me a luxury hotel.

I've never been camping, doesn't look like something I would enjoy.
Probably depends on the company though.

I spend an inordinate amount of time staying in some of Europe's finest hotels as a result of my job. So I always find that nature is my 5 star accommodation when I've time off. Wild camping is something I take part in on a regular basis. We will plot out a hiking route, get into the Beamer, head to the trail head, and get out there for some exercise and relaxation over two or three nights.
The highlight of my camping experience so far was deciding to take a few weeks off last year to head to Canada and take part in a group effort to build a log cabin. We camped out each night, as the cabin started to come together. The evenings would be spent fishing on the lake shore, cooking simple meals, and reflecting on the wonder of this world. The days would be spent cutting trees, becoming one with a mallet and chisel, getting slightly annoyed at the shoddy workmanship of some of the hangers-on in the group.
We left 3 weeks later with a log cabin that can be used by anyone hiking through the National Park. If I was returning to it again, then I'd definitely sleep in the bunks on the right hand side, as there were some Australians and New Zealanders ganging together to make a hames of the left.

I can completely empathise with your post except I was in Sweden. I drove my beamer onto the ferry from Latvia. I usually stop off in Latvia after an exhausting drive across Europe, because I find Latvia to be a really nice place to camp especially in the Gauja Valley. Summer there is awesome. Obviously I stay in nice hotels while driving my 4 series coupe across the continent. I find it's more suited to the weather there as summer in Ireland can be an absolute wash out. Once the voyage from Riga to Sweden is complete, then Grandeeod just goes nuts. I don't build log cabins in the wilderness though. I tend to wild camp and build isolated little saunas with my Swedish friends. It's a very rewarding breakaway. If you ever find yourself in a remote sauna in a place called Svartnas, be careful of the top bench, right hand side, as it will burn the absolute arse off you. I blame the Swedish guys and gals from Lingbo. Wasters.

I don't get the people who say it's stuffy and humid. Maybe if you're unlucky or silly enough to choose the day we're having the Summer to go camping but the 99% of the year it's a lot fresher than sleeping in a house.
