Noticed Topaz have fuel card offering 2 cents per litre off.
Anyone using it? Any other better fuel cards?

We operate a few of them at work and CFO usually tells us on a Monday which one to use between Topaz, DCI etc. Seem to be on Topaz 80% of the time!

i'm using one, it's handy alright, my local in Trim though is sometimes 7/8 cents a litre more expensive than the topaz on the quays so i always use that one. They send you a bill every Friday night, then take the DD for that bill 10 days later

If your work uses groupschemes for workplace benefits you could get a better deal. Think mine (topaz) gives me 5c a litre and about 6 weeks interest free credit. Not sure of they're still doing that but worth a look

I drive my personal car and don't have any business.
Can i still get Topaz or DCI fuel card?

Applegreen says i need to purchase minimum 500 lit a month to avail their card

AXA customers can get one (4c off per litre I think) & Three customers can get one (3c off per litre) through 3 Plus.

    Both Topaz

Most cards have an annual fee. If you are not doing the mileage, then you won't get the lowest rates. Dci is diesel only.

Someone doing 20k km a year will pay €30 a year fee and save a cent or two on the better priced garages - some people will compare the prices to the highest priced garage to make it feel good.

    20k km @ say 5l per 100km = 1000 litres, say 2c saving. = €20

Mostly where these cards come in handy is for the invoicing for claiming vat back on diesel, but if you can't claim then the value of the cards for an individual is not there

DCI prices are 5/7 cents per litre cheaper than others at present. If you apply for that card, give you PPS no. as its the same as a vat no. DCI won't know the difference.

That's good to know. I have diesel car.

But later can they ask to show the business or receipts? And is it true that there is 30€ a year fees after the first year?

I've a DCI card thru a credit union.
    No annual fee
    4c off a litre
Top car wash for €5 (normally €10)

Works pretty much everywhere except applegreen

The don't ask afaik. I get hit with the €30 each year as well. They told me the charge is the same as with all credit/debit cards. In other words, dosh for the Govt.

5-7c cheaper than the more expensive stations. 2-3c on the better value stations

Then you have to watch the price they quote every week. After 3-4 months the price difference changes, then it can become more expensive. If you don't watch it you could be paying 10-15c more than pump price or more.

    I do roughly 17-20k kms a year.

So i think i gain only a tenner or so...

It might be worth noting Permanent TSB customers can also get 2c off with a fuel card, it's currently 4c off for the rest of the year.

I've thought about getting one as I'm switching to them soon but it isn't really worth it for me. Yeah it's nice to save a few cent per litre, but 90c per tank isn't really an issue when I'm spending €60 anyway. I know it's not a good attitude financial wise as every little saving adds up in the big picture but that's probably the only thing I don't care about. I'm not going to drive to another garage for example to save 2-3 cent.

On the other hand, if the garage beside me at work is 3-5c cheaper than home I'll just go there because it's on the way.

I understand some people are near expensive garages though so that would make sense.

I also have the AXA card. Grand and handy. I think the 4c off rate was only until early June though and it's back to 2c off now.

Learned this lesson the hard way. We were getting the weekly quotes from Fuel Plus / DCI and they were sent as ex VAT prices - I always assumed they were sending us the best available price. ( we have 4 fuel cards with Fuel PLus )

I reckon we have overpaid thousands in the last couple of years using these fuel cards against the local pump prices.

Needless to say Fuel Plus immediately dropped our weekly price by 11% CPL when it was brought to their attention.

So all this time, because we never questioned their prices we have paid top dollar on these fuel cards - IMO it is a very devious way of doing business.

Currently you should be about 95.5c + vat on fuel cards.

Anything higher, call them and ask for reduction.

A little warning to anyone emailing or calling these places to enquire.... They absolutely hound you non stop afterwards trying to get you to join up. Im even getting calls from Fuel card companies i never even contacted.

It would appear that DCI have quite a few different subsidiaries operating under the one parent company.

    Just got this weeks quote:

Fastfuel price Mon - Sun is 99.82 CPL ex VAT

Out of curiosity, who is giving you that price?

Just got an e-mail for the following price:

Fastfuel price Mon - Sun is 99.82 CPL
    ex VAT

99.82 ex vat = 1.23 incl vat - that's more expensive than most filling stations.

Fuel card compnaies are probably the sneakiest price gougers about.

They suck you in, and if you donl;t watch your price, the price gradually increase over and above their floor price every couple of weeks.

You need to contact them about every 10-12 weeks and ensure you are put on their best price.

If you do not contact them, then after 12-18 months you'll be paying 15-20c ABOVE the pump price.

So ignore their invoices at your peril - the quoted price is ex vat - add 23% to compare with pump prices and NEVER trust them.

Seems forecourt prices are going up next week - a lot of refineries are out of action in texas leading to increased demand on other refineries leading to increased prices.

Refinery and currency changes feed into pump price far quicker than oil price changes.

Just been offered a fuel card from Choose a Fuel Card. Say they can't guarantee rate but will send you a text each week with their rates which you can check and ensure they're the lowest at the minute. Money comes out of your account by Direct Debit each week. Bonus for me as a sole trader is that I get a statement which I can use for accounts purposes. Also, helps me avoid bringing credit card on the road with me and using it for non-necessary items on the road..? Anyone any DOWNFALLS on using fuel cards before I accept?

Good point, will make a note to keep a check. Have you got back onto them and had your rate reduced as a result?

I've been using the Topaz fuel card for almost 10 years and have only just discovered that they have been charging me up to 33 cents per litre over the forecourt price. Be weary of what they are offering, the over charges are totally random
