Ear in agony from new headphones

I recently bought a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50X headphones from Amazon. They sound good but my God they hurt. The headband was hurting my head due to them not being well padded but I sorted that out by wrapping a microfibre cloth around them. However there's another problem with them I can't get around.

They're clamping down on my right ear. I have both ears pierced and I thought they were pushing one of my earrings into my face so I removed the earring from my right ear to no avail. The pain is just as bad. They were hurting my ear lobe as well as the area just behind it so I adjusted the ear cups. That made the pain much worse. They ended up pushing up against the hard bit of ear just over the lobe and it was like my ear was in a vice grip.

They're not hurting my left ear at all.

I had read about them being uncomfortable (unfortunately I read all of this after I had ordered them) so I ordered a pair of velour ear pads on eBay. They're a cheap-ish pair from China so will take weeks to get here. I don't even know if they'll make the headphones any more wearable.

Has anyone else felt pain as bad as this from headphones? And if so were you able to do anything to make them more comfortable? I'm wondering should I wait for the ear pads to get here and see if they help or if I should try returning the headphones while they haven't been used too much.
