Was in both recently. I like Westport but it's quiet. Achill I drove through really. Nice scenery but that's about all.

It's got stuff going for it alright. The centre has a nice atmosphere for most of the day. The accent is amusing. The hilltop views and walks out by Blackrock and the disused railway are really nice.

Some locals there have a hyperinflated opinion of it though that serves only to betray a horrendous lack of familiarity with the rest of this island to any fools such as myself caught conversing with them.

I dont get why people say Dublin city is overrated.
Anyone I know thinks its a kip, an expensive one at that, so its rated fairly accurately if you ask me.
Yea, some Dubs think its the best place on the planet, but they obviously havent seen much outside Dublin to think like that.

The only place I was ever really disappointed at when I finally got there, that people rave about inexplicably, is Kinsale.
I was expecting some class of medieval streetscape with a bit of substance whereas its barely a village, barely a port, its just shag all except hype - and a massive traffic jam.
Theres more substance and charm to Clones, which really says a lot about how crap Kinsale is.

    you're a charlatan

I bet your experience of Dublin starts and ends with O Connell Street

Dublin is a city of wonderful parks and villages.

Says it all really that you think Kinsale is disappointing. It's a beautiful place. With some of best seaside bars and eateries in Ireland.

    Maybe you're just uncouth.

Fish n Chip shop in dingle very little change from 20 euros what a rip off said it to the owner.

How we take that really depends on what you bought.

    Fair call on Kinsale.

I went back a few times to check it wasn't a funny mood on my part.

It is completely underwhelming in respect to the chatter about it.

Bulman in Kinsale is one of the best pubs in Ireland.

Donnybrook - meh. Some of the houses are nice to look at, I'll give you that, but otherwise - meh!

Kinsale would be grand if it wasn't too close to the city. Makes it too accessible and it ends up being choked with scumbags and snobby wánkers on any nice weekend in summer.

    possibly

It's a grand gateway to West Cork though.

Because it's full of ****ty houses and ****ty hotels, no proper accommodation. Remember trying to watch a ManUtd game and no pub had sky sports apart from a few dodgy boxes which didn't work.

Houses everywhere, no planning laws obviously in place. It's a lovely spot, keem beach, keel etc I'd love to knock the whole place and re do it.

I know it's not a town or County but Tory Island was a big let down. I wasn't sure what to to expect. It's basically an inverted landfill sticking out of the sea.

Stayed in a guest house there once - uurrgh

Religious icons all over the shop - sacred heart pictures in the room.

Was fairly obvious that the lady was put out that myself and the now missus were unmarried - she actually tried to casually suggest that a twin room might be better for us..

Next day her card machine was on the blink - started accusing me of trying to ruse her and that we were abusing her.. My card was fine. I rang the bank to ask was there any issue with my card - they said no - she kept maintaining that it was my card. In the end, the bank had to talk her through doing some sort of manual transaction insisting that the issue was not with our card. She was still aots and screamed that she never wanted to see us again.

    Feeling was mutual

    All a bit odd.

On the plus side - the weather was brilliant and Keem beach was stunning.

Ballsbridge and Sandymount are the nicest parts of Dublin 4.

Galway all day long. Just back from a few days there. Nice place but unless you are on the tear it's boring enough. There is very little to do there really. Mad expensive for hotels and the traffic sucks as well for such a small city. Will never understand the attraction of it.

Beat me to it. I was there in the 90s on a school tour and actually enjoyed it. Got the chance to go back 2 years ago and was so disappointed. Nothing to do, clogged with traffic and Eyre Square was full of drunks at 6pm in the evening. We had our then 3 year old with us and felt very uneasy walking around the town with the amount or drinking and arseholery. We went for the weekend and ended up driving out to Salthill for a whole day just to avoid the city. Wont be going back in a hurry.

Going on the tear in Galway is the attraction of Galway
