These garbage collectors are really getting on my wick.

They rock up with their noisy vehicles anywhere between 5am to 7am waking ppl up in the process, disrupting the sleep of the locals.

In the small town I live in I can't see any reason that they can't carry out their activities in the evening when there is hardly any traffic that would be held up while they carry out their duties, while they block the road for a few minutes.

What do I do? Talk to a politician or what. It's really pissing me off now. Ridiculous when one considers that most ppl pay for the privilege of having their garbage disposed of. Paying for this noise guys. Wept.

Someone's forgotten to put their bins out again.

I'm with you. I live in a small house on a small, narrow cul-de-sac, with no front garden, so my window is right on the street. The bin trucks have to reverse down the street because they have nowhere to turn at the end. There are 3 different bin companies in operation in the city, and all 3 service different houses on the street, so between 6-7am 3 different trucks come down, with the reversing beepers on, make a huge clatter rolling the bins around the street, mechanically lifting the bins, big loud engine as the truck inches along, only for the next ones to do it in a few minutes time. Why can't they wait until after 9am to start? There'd be way more room for them as most cars would be gone fur the day.

    Double glazing.

I'm sure if you ask the waste companies to have their staff twiddle their thumbs until 9am, they would oblige.

In Dublin they can collect after the time specified in the by laws

Get everyone in the street to use the one company. The only one truck comes down

Surely at that hour of the morning they are distributing the peace, I wonder would a query to the Gardai help?

Go back to sleep after being woken. Most people do.

They're collecting rubbish, not distributing it

Would ye not all just put your bins at the top of the road?

Oh just look at you with your fancy ideas.

And people wonder why you can't get the gardai when you need them.

When I lived in Galway I was deprived of a sleep-in on 3 days a week by competing bin companies collecting on different days

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,426 ✭✭✭Neon_Lights

OP there's a freight train track directly beside my house with trains running through the night.

Add to this garbage collection and my estate being used as a car park for ignorant office workers arriving from 6am and I still manage to sleep like a log.

I think there's no hope for people like you.

I work in this industry for a well known national company.

I start at 4.30am and finish between 4.30/5pm every day.

Complaints will always happen, it's part of the job.

But your suggestion OP, that we carry on into the evening is absurd !

Do you think that just because we are bin men/ rubbish collectors that we have no lives?

I have 4 kids and wouldn't dream of working on just to please individuals like yourself.

Now, if you personally want to pay my wages to do as you request, I'm sure we can work something out in that case. :pac:

No way , do you get to drive the truck ?
Does it go beep , beep ,beep ,beep , beep ?
Can you hang off the back of it and bring it home at night ?

    Beep , beep , beep , Beeeeeeeeep.

If people got up in the morning they wouldn't have this problem. It's far from burning daylight I was reared.

If Im still upstairs getting ready when I hear the bin truck, I lose the competition in my head. If Im downstairs and ready to go, I win.

    OP, what about getting earplugs?

One of the companies in my area does their collection at 8am on a Saturday. A SATURDAY. Always get woken by them and often don't get back to sleep.

The answer to all of the above is yes!

One thing though, in relation to the beeping, and i can only speak for my own company, there is a switch on the dash of the truck that allows me to turn off the beeping, which in the early hours i do.

But even this isn't good enough to some people.

    You're lucky, it's 6am here!

Before i went into the industry though i would have been the same, woken up early and unable to get back to sleep, but Saturday's didn't bother me too much.

A Sunday is totally different altogether.

If you don't sleep in OP you won't be woken up.

I do usually be up early and see the binmen at work, the guy on the back emptying the bins must be freezing in winter.

Obviously I don't know what you are on but I'd hope employers would pay a reasonable salary for that kind of work.

Yeah i've only been on the back one day as they were badly stuck. not nice i admit!

    I'm on over 30k a year, on a 4 day week.

I'd do the odd 5th day here and there.

Only for the money, i wouldn't have taken the job, stayed in the job.

It must be the easiest, best paying job i have had.

And in case people wonder, no the smell of rubbish doesn't go home with you, it's all a myth.

Thanks for the info, I often thought of applying for a job with one of the companies here in Galway, work in a coldstore at the moment so I'm used to the cold and that's a lot better money than what I'm on.

Do you still get Christmas gifts from customers?

I remember being on a truck maybe 10 years ago as part of an EPA project and one house had left out a bag of fresh scones at the gate with an envelope in it cos it was about 2 weeks to Christmas!

4 day week, early finishes, no real stress to bring home with you. That's pretty peachy for 30k!
