Alternative Method Of Recording HD Output

I have Eir Broadband and a Stand-Alone Sky HD Box for viewing Eir/BT Sport.
There is no Sky sub on this box; thus, there is no recording/pause capability.

I have the HD output going into a DVB-T modulator which allows me to record on any Saorview/Freeview recorder.

Are there any other (cheaper) solutions available?

Not sure, but there is some indication that the HDMI out could be sent over the LAN as IP so if you have something to record that then it might be cheaper.

    Some links

If you are confined to coax then I doubt there is anything cheaper than what you linked to.

The benefit of using the LAN is that the stream is available to all LAN connected devices.

I set up this modulator yesterday and am pleased, in general, with the results.

My only remaining 'problem' is how to reduce the bit rate, as what I tried did not seem to work :(

I thought I had reduced it but the data over the LAN is high and recorded results are still very large.

I have the signal sent to a DVB-T tuner controlled by Tvheadend which in turn makes it available across the LAN, and manages recordings etc.

Have you noticed recordings being on the large side?

The analog signal out of that box will be uncompressed. It won't compress the individual frames. And more importantly it won't compare the current frame to the previous ones.

A Linux receiver as then can record HD or SD streams directly from the feed. And store / stream too. Some will work with a SKY card BUT you'd need to confirm before you buy. IIRC you'd also need to put it in a SKY box once in a while to keep the card activated ?

For Free To Air channels (not free to view where you need a card)
If you want an idiot proof interface then IIRC most Freesat boxes will allow you to copy SD recordings off the box too. The old Humax Foxsat HDR with a patch will allow you to copy HD recordings off the box too.

Analogue signal out of what box?
    This box http://www.freetv.ie/hdmi-modulator/ is a DVB-T modulator (HDMI>DVB-T).

None will work with a Sky card now for the eir sports channels. It is possible still to receive Sony & Sony+1 with a non-Sky-sub card and eir sports enabled.
Last year it was possible, not now.

Of no use in this instance - they do not have the capability required ..... receive and record eir sports channels.

Update on this ...... I have had to allocate a separate tuner for this because when I used it to provide the two Saorview muxes as well as the Sky box output, it killed one of the muxes.
So for now the Edision is fed into a cheap USB tuner stick and the aerial feed remains feeding the main tuners.

I'm rather disappointed with this, but I had an old USB tuner here so it worked out OK. I think the tuner stick cost me about €10 a couple of years ago.
