Worm dosed lambs here today with zerofen lambs weren't dirty at all they looked dirtyier a few weeks ago... seem till be doing ok nothing lagging behind anyhow but might go with a cobalt oral dose at the weekend in them as I'll be shifting them then onto new grass... have a bottle off the cobalt with b12 lying here say I'll go with that instead a mixing up a batch myself... what's people's schedule this time off year for cobalting lambs? Every worm dose i guess for handyness? Or handier again bolus them although it's costly and didn't prove a great success here last year!

I dont have lambs, but if the bolus wasnt a huge success - would you be willing to try a few of em with 2 bolus?

My theory being that maybe one bolus didn't provide enough colbalt.

I know this makes it more costly again, but if you had a few bolus it might be a good experiment.

Easy for me to to talk though, when tis your lambs / money ;)

Dosed all lambs last weekend moved to a cydectin drench this time bolused all lambs with 8 week bolus 25 cent a bullet.

Will use a new type wormer orange (startect) next dose when dung samples indicate I need to dose.

Cattle man what bolus lasts 8 weeks and would ya not get that cover or very near it just oral dosing? The 2 bolus idea wouldn't work IMO because if you give 2 at the same time then they will both be breaking down at the same time so will be just releasing twice as much cobalt but for no extended period... there supposed till do lambs 6 months so giving them another at that stage will end up very costly especially when most lambs will be away or factory ready by then and anything else shouldnt be far away so wudnt need 6 months cover.... unless keeping replacements which I won't be.

The Mayo bolus are 8 weeks...

    http://www.mayohealthcare.ie/product-details.php?ID=8

Used em before, wasnt impressed then - I ended up oral dosing as well. If I had lambs again, I would test with giving two of these bolus...

Thats where I was coming from with the two bolus Lambman

Be interesting to know how much cobalt their lamb bolus is supplying,
Their 12mth one seems to have a huge amount of cobalt....Up to 2mg/day

The 8 week bolus supplies 5mg per day of Cobalt Acetate so 1.25mg of elemental Cobalt. It's more than any other bolus I've seen

What price is startect now. Our vet said it has dropped significantly in price this year?

Was going to buy and mix cobalt dust here before until I read It's apparently toxic and linked to cancer if inhaled, but harmless once mixed and watered down. So thought it safer to buy it at €15 for 5 litres mixed.

So €13 a month with ewes and lambs is 2 months when weaned same as the 8 week bolus... bolus is 25c per lamb so the lick would have till keep 52 lambs for 2 months till make it the same and that's not gonna happen... yea you can buy cobalt highly concentrated if your happier with that still works out alot cheaper if say... who makes startect and wats all in it?

Didn't price yet but was told by a vet it's well back in price.
Had issues here with worms so was advised to use this mid July to allow a break from other wormers

It has 80 mg/kg, if they'd eat half of what a ewe would they'd be getting 0.8mg a day

Would be plenty unless lands very deprived off cobalt... how'd u work that out ganmo and in your calculations how long would a bucket last a lamb or 10 say for easier counting ...

It looks to have all the important minerals, all they have to do is eat enough of it
How many kgs in the bucket
How many ewes and lambs are you putting it to

Bought 8 but didn't put any in field yet there's 68 ewes and 107 lambs.... might still go with a oral drench now at weekend when moving them and keep licks for when weaning in maybe 3-4 weeks... not sure wat till do might throw in a half till get them used till it along with the drench... 4 be skimpy tho if they do take till them.

Lambs are unable to store some minerals like cobalt so the drench will only last about two to three weeks at most, be best to put a couple buckets out for a week or two before weaning to train them, lambs need minerals to be working well at times of stress like weaning
