Cable link to sky

I am tying to sort out TV for a relative who is paying Virgin Media ?30 a month for basic TV through the old cable link setup in one room and paying sky in two other rooms. The cable link TV only has about 15-18 channels. Is there anyway some of those basic channels would still be there if I cancel the Virgin Media account? I think they are all FTA channels.

If they have and keep the broadband they would keep them, otherwise they will eventually be disconnected by Virgin, could be a few weeks, could be a few months but they will get disconnected eventually.

Other options would be to run a cable from the dish and buy a FTA or Freesat receiver to get the BBC/ITV channels on that other tv. Also could get a saorview receiver and an aeriel to get the RTE channels. There's also combo boxes that run Freesat and Saorview channels off a dish and aeriel.

OP never mentioned broadband and for €30 I doubt they are getting BB & analog TV. It sounds like a legacy account with (pre-digital) TV only.

If they close the account, it's almost certain that VM will send out a guy in a van to cut them off, sooner rather than later.

The cheapest offer for BB only on the VM website is €50 p.m. after 6 months....

Sorry I should have clarified €30 is just for TV. They have internet with Eir. VM said they can't provide horizon in the area. Since the channels with get cut off then I guess I should look at sky multi room or upgrade the old sky plus box to the new sky q and get a mini box to use on that TV.

Just to update. I have been offered the new SkyQ box and two mini boxes at a cost of ?35 per month for everything but a once off fee of ?180 for all the boxes and install. I have just thought of an alternative and wondering would it be worth my while:

Keep my current Sky box and 1 multiroom box for ?30 pm and get a combo box to receive the FTA and Irish channels where the cable link was. Something like this maybe?

I'm not up to scratch on these boxes. Only the basic FTA and Irish channels are needed for that room so a once off payment of ?93 with no subscription from then on seems like a better option than ?180 and a probable price hike 12 months down the line.

Is it just a case of running a cable to the satellite that Sky are already using for set up?

That is what was suggested earlier in the thread

You will also need a connection to an aerial for the Irish Saorview channels.
