I have survived :) It was very straightforward. As far as hospital experiences go it was a good one. A bad case of IBS.

Now can I hear the poo story? :p

i did movie prep for the first time last week Gingernut and it was fine honestly, to be fair i was very good with the pre prep diet and stuff but id no pains or burning or anything this time.
    it was ALOT gentler.
make sure before you start to put some sudocrem or vasaline (down there) and keep reapplying to make sure all is nicely protected
keep sipping the water or flat 7up or whatever and make yourself comfy. a bit of netflix or a good book will see you though...

I'm hoping it's not to harsh on me.. never had anything like this before so I'm a newbie 😂 Oh I have plenty of Netflix lined up to watch.. what's the sedation like? The girl told me it might knock me for 6 because I've never had anything like it before 😑

sedation totally depends on the person, youll go in and will already have a canula in your arm or hand, the doctor will give you the sedation and depending you will drift off into a lovely sleep or just become really really relaxed, like floating.
ive been awake for two scopes now and while its weird being able to look and watch the screen but i was knocked out totally for a few as well, all that happens when im out totally is i drift off after the drugs are given and wake up later int he recovery room.. you sit/lie there for a while then they take you back to the bed and give you tea and toast.
i was terrified for my first one but honestly its just the unknown, you might have a bit of a swollen or sore tummy after and lots of wind but again it depends on the person, just allow yourself the time to rest after the sedation coz you can be a bit wobbly.

Best of luck tomorrow. I found the after effects of taking the Preps the worst part of the whole thing. I thought the toilet visits would never stop. Went on through the night for me after starting the prep at 4pm. No problem drinking it at all though.

Felt terrible the next morning going into the hospital. Splitting headache and nauseous, I think I must have been badly hydrated.

The sedation was fantastic. I walked from the changing room into the operating room and jumped up on the trolley. The doctor told me he would give me some sedation to help me relax and I could ask for more if I needed it. The next thing I remember is waking up outside in the recovery room, so a totally painless procedure. I had no recollection of anything happening. Also zero side eff cts from the sedative apart from obviously feeling a little lethargic.

On a side note, I have posted previously on this thread, had the procedure done at the end of September and didn't really get any problems resolved. Anyway I have an appointment at the end of this month with a urologist in Beaumont. As previously explained I presented at my GPs last June with my usual problems(all bowel related)and after an examination he told me that my prostate was enlarged and I needed it investigated.
I paid to get a ultra sound scan done privately and it showed it was slightly enlarged but not of major concern so I was listed as routine so this appointment is from last June.

I'm hoping(and fairly confident) that I don't have any serious prostate problems but I'm willing to get anything investigated at this stage to get to the bottom of my symptoms. Even if this means the urologist finding nothing, hopefully I will be referred back the original department and kept in the system for further investigation.

Apologies for going a bit OT and to Gingernut93 but this isssue has totally dominated the last three years of my life and nearly turn d me into a hermit.

Good luck to you Gingernut93. Hope it all goes good for you and you have a positive and satisfactory outcome.

Hi guys. I went to my gp about a year ago as i had some bright red blood after a bowel movement. He gave me a digital exam and said he couldn't feel anything and gave me a prescription for some cream. The blood disappeared for a while but sometimes it comes back on and off. Do i need to go back to the gp again now to get a referral? I am V scared to go for this and frightened to leave it and do nothing. I have no health insurance...Can anyone advise how much they paid for this procedure? Thanks.

Hi laylag, unfortunately no one here is qualified to advise on whether your symptoms need attention, you should speak with your doctor if you're unsure.

I'm not sure on costs involved with a colonoscopy, but other posters should be able to advise on this.

according to the bill my insurance company got my last scope was over 700 euro. and you dont need health insurance, you will wait for a bit but you will get seen if its serious.
from my experience (and im not a doctor) red blood is anal or hemorrhoids or a tear, its the black tarry stuff youve to be concerned about.
red is fresh external blood, black or in a stool is internal bleeding - (again just from my experience)
go back to your GP, better safe then sorry... you might  not even need a scope, you might just need to take a stool softener or something.

    Absolutely NOT.
Red blood is not necessarily external blood. Bright red blood per rectum (BRBPR) is to be taken as seriously as dark or tarry stool (melena). You haven't said what age you are; however, if you are having continued BRBPR, you absolutely need to see your GP as soon as possible. It may be something benign like hemorrhoids; however, you cannot take that chance.

Best of luck to all of you waiting to go in for the auld bum cam :p and those waiting on results.

I finally got around to tackling my poop for a sample this morning. Ick. The IBS has been quiet ish of late. So no excrutiating cramps, inability to eat anything at all, and zero relief from the usual suspects of colpermin, spasmodol, fybogel, and my personal favourites "drink lots of water" and "eat plenty of fruit".

Fingers crossed my good spell continues :)

Am getting the two scopes done next Tuesday, not really looking forward to it but hoping to find out once & for all what is wrong with me :(

Finally got a date for Tuesday morning. Only for I requested to go on the cancellation list God only knows how much longer I'd be waiting. It's nearly 18 months since my gp referred me. Not looking forward to the prep but it's a necessary evil.

dont worry about the prep, its gets bad press but ive has worse flares than my last prep.
just remember the easier you go on food and stuff in the days leaving up to taking the prep the easiers it is on you.
and suck down the water and fluids like its going out of fashion, drinking while you are effectively running like a tap out your bum going against everything you feel is right but it will stop you dehydrating and thats miserable!

Best of luck with it. The waiting time is a disgrace really and I know what its like to wait such a long time.

A quick update on mine for those who remember me posting(think I eventually got done last September). After being back at the clinic and with nothing showing except some polyps that were removed. with my symptoms still being the same, I am going for a Proctogram this Wednesday!!(google it if you dont know what it is!!)

Hope all goes well - my prep wasn't too bad either - I was told to fast (just fluids Bovril etc for two days prior and then took picolax (?) which wasn't a big long drink - just a few short ones)

Felt starving by the time everything was over!!

Doesn't sound too invasive - but you may feel like a drugs mule ;) hope all goes well.

I had polyps removed too and a diagnosis of diverticulitis have to go back for another in 6 years they said (which is only next year - my how time flies!!)

Yeah I've to go back in three years for another colonoscopy. Beaumont rang me in March to discuss the results. March!! I had the colonoscopy in September the previous year!
When they asked had my symptoms cleared up and I told them they were still the same they were very helpful to be fair. They said I needed to come back in to see one of the team again so. (I expected the usual months and months of wait for an appointment). They told me they would send an appointment out in the post and they would see me within a month.

No sign of a letter two weeks later and I had given up on the timeframe. The following week a letter arrived with an appointment for 10 days later, nearly exactly a month from the phone call. Went in and they said about getting the Proctogram done and it would take a couple of months at least for an appointment. Rang the secretary after about a month after not receiving an appointment to make sure I was still lined up for one. She told me that there was very long waiting lists for all their clinics and procedures, some up to two years and I would have to wait. She was really unhelpful and couldn't wait to get me off the phone.

Anyway out of the blue today I get a phone call from Beaumont to say they have a slot on Wednesday that has become available if I want to take it! I was equally delighted and nervous but after waiting for months on end between appointments/procedures, dragging my problems into years at this stage it was a no brainer to say yes.
