Constant unwanted event notifications on Facebook

Over the last few months a majority of the notifications I've been getting have been event notifications. I've rarely any interest in them. It's either from a band I've liked hosting a new gig, or a music venue organising an event, a local cinema doing a screening of something etc

I'm also getting notifications telling me that random friends are interested in some sort of event going on.

Is there a solution to these unnecessary notifications? The cynic in me has me thinking less people are using FB these days and these notifications are being shown to draw people back into their accounts.
